I for one dont like automated cashiers I try to find a live person cashier, maybe I'm old fashion and dont fit into the program and I think cashiers are a unappreciated and under paid work force. But on the other hand when things become more automated I dont think it's eliminating jobs it's only relocating jobs, someone has to make the automation and maintain it, therefore I'll add the grease and tighten the bolts I couldn't stand being a cashier...............

Was against self checkouts when they first came put, now they are my favorite.

I just recently had the experience of needing a plumbing piece - 1/2-in FIP 30-in Braided Stainless Steel Faucet Supply Line, that's FIP on both ends.
Checked local ACE - nope, didn't carry it could order it. Walmart nope, Home Depot nope, didn't carry it could order it. Lowes had a box or two of them.
Now a few years ago the local ACE would have had it, but they "modernized" and moved, now they too have limited stock on hand. The Tupelo Lowes is getting that way, I expect soon they and HD will just have pictures and you will have to order and wait for delivery.

I do just fine without them or home cheapo, both places are chock a block full of Chinese made junk.. I have better things to do than look through a stack of lumber to get 4 straight boards.. They can both go bye bye for all I care..

I support my local lumber yard. Same as you refuse to waste time looking for a straight piece of lumber. Plus they carry Klein tools and other quality brands. Yeah do pay a bit more, but rather then complain about BB stores I'll just support the locals. Plus the rapport and relationships built here last a lifetime....

Companies will continue to cut positions to protect their bottom line and return a profit to share holders.

Evidently Lowes has determined they can save money by jobbing out some of the labor.

What they're doing is a shell game, or 3 Card Monty. Watch closely, keep your eye on the workers, don't be distracted by the shuffle ... workers, workers, where are the workers? Oh, look they're still here, doing the same job, but now employed by a third party at lower pay, less benefits and no seniority.

I despise them with a passion and will carry everything to the opposite end of the store if need be, garden center, contractor lane, customer service counter or wherever else to have a live person do it. I search for closeouts, discounts, damaged items, etc. and need a live person to make the adjustments.

But on the other hand when things become more automated I dont think it's eliminating jobs it's only relocating jobs, someone has to make the automation and maintain it, therefore I'll add the grease and tighten the bolts I couldn't stand being a cashier...............
But not the same people. Those who are cashiers may not be qualified to build, program or maintain autobots.

I don't care if the store maintenance is done in house or subbed out. As long as they have what I need, at the best price, that's what matters.
That's exactly the way I also feel.

That 'nough said and covers it all as I'm concerned. And no I didn't read any farther into this thread.

For anyone else curious, it's a French patisserie treat AKA 'sux donut'.

I guess many Lowe's workers will be getting sux donuts as a bonus for 'staying with their jobs'.

Pretty much the point of my responses to this thread. Too many folks working for less than a living wage.
Of course if it does not directly affect someone, it is all good.
School districts are a good example. Tens of thousands of dollars per student per year of budget and the bus drivers and other support staff work for peanuts, often at part time permanent status.

Our school bus drivers start around $19 per hour and they can't fill the positions.

In high school we had a German language teacher from Oklahoma...

Sprechen Sie Deutsch y'all?

What with Michigan's recent herbal entertainment statutes, many can pass the driving test, but can't pi__ the 'other' test.

Where are the self driving schoolbuses!!

Meanwhile, go search for all the posters on this and so many other sites wanting to support Chinese companies instead of US ones. They want cheap prices no matter what. Their co-workers, neighbors, and even family are second fiddle to their wallets.

One hand does not wash the other anymore in this land. But wait, I can hear the screams when THEY loose their jobs because of overseas competition. Maybe they can find a job as an Amazon reseller ! Instead of buying directly from a local company, you pay someone to buy it for you from Amazon and then they ship it to you to hide the connection.

Glad my future will be absent from all the rats trying to hang onto the handrail as the ship sinks.

I said this in the early 80's when wallyworld popped up all over the country. The same people who complain about losing jobs trip over each other getting into walmart to by the cheapest junk they can find.

Had a friend that worked for HD years ago when they made everyone re-apply for their jobs. He was offered his same position at his current pay but resigned on general principals. I think the story was one of the employees under him that was NOT allowed to keep his job was a good worker but had a disability.

The American business model becomes more UN-American every day. I can't believe the number of people that accept and applaud companies that screw over their fellow Americans.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a school aged kid these days. All they have to do is claim you did something and your life is turned upside down. I wouldn't drive a school bus for $190/hour with two other adult witnesses on board.

I'm not a fan of unions in non-hazardous fields, but this is how retail unions get started.

There is an entitlement attitude with many. But you are not entitled to keep your job if it can be done either better, or less expensively by someone else. If someone has marketable skills, they find another job. If not, reality can be cruel.

Socialism is coming and when it gets here it will not be pretty.
