Bad Knees

My BIL had both of his knees replaced. Either my sister or I need to do RV roof work for him now. His knees will not bend far enough to make that last rung onto roof. He was/is willing to give up that for all the benefits of the replacement.

I understand. As the doctor said, "The idea is to be able to walk without hurting."

You will be fine in a few more weeks. It is a slow process. I have my 98 year old next door neighbor here in the office with me and I am questioning him as I post on this subject. He had both his replaced in his early ninety's. He says the more you use it the better quicker the pain goes away and also the range of movement gets better. Ken Sweet

This morning was my 12 week checkup after the knee replacement surgery. Of course they made a few x-rays, just as they did 6 weeks ago. And the doctor showed me the x-rays on this laptop computer. (At least he said they were x-rays of my knee). Everything lined up perfectly.

Hard to believe it has been 12 weeks. :D

Glad it is working out. I think my mother is getting to the point that she will need the surgery and what people on this thread have said makes me feel better about the procedure compared to the results of my grandfather's operation.

Dan, I guess it just depends on getting a good doctor and hospital with the experience in whatever kind of surgery a person has. I happened to have a doctor and hospital that kind of specialize in joint reconstruction, so I doubt that you could find anyone any better at it than they are. Of course I haven't spent a great deal of time with this doctor, but he's a likeable fellow as well as having lots of experience.

Of course, no surgery is fun, but I think you can tell your mother that it ain't too bad either.;)

Glad to hear you're progressing well, Bird.

You're experiencing about the same things I did with my knee replacements.

The thing to remember is that whatever pain you're experiencing now is due to the trauma of the surgery not the original knee joint dis-integration that got you there. The surgery trauma will heal - it will just take time.

I have the replacement of my left knee scheduled for right after Christmas. I will be using the same surgeon that repaired my left hip. That went well and I experienced little pain. The cause being a fall there was no existing trauma to the surrounding tissues and structures which made my recovery easier. That is not true for the knees so I expect a lot more pain after the surgery.

Bird, I hope that I do as well as you have done. One thing that will help me is that my surgeon uses surgical glue to repair the tissues not sutures or staples. Less scaring

Vernon, my surgeon does use staples, but I don't mind the scar it left at all. The surgery was on a Monday morning, I went home Thursday afternoon, had a home health care physical therapist 5 days a week for 2 weeks, then went to out patient physical therapy 3 days a week for 5 weeks. And all the people who participated in my care, in the hospital, at home, and at the physical therapists were good folks. Hope you have as good a crew of care providers as I had.

I mowed, edged, and trimmed the yard this morning and used the grass catcher because I wanted to pick up the leaves, even though most of the leaves on the bradford pear trees have not fallen yet. I ran the Mantis tiller just to be sure it would still start and run OK, then used the Stihl string trimmer, and finally the Toro mower. And I was able to do all that with almost no pain. Then I showered and sat down to rest and when I started to get up, I found I'd stiffened up from all that exercise after my recent inactivity.:laughing:

But yes, I think I've been lucky and am doing well.

Bird, I think you have a lot to be thankful for today and beyond. This seems to all have gone quite well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Margaret.

Vernon, considering your events this year, I'm sure you are giving thanks too. Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

On Wednesday of this week, Kathy and I had lunch with Bird and Margaret at a newly re-opened Chinese buffet in Denton, TX. I can tell you that we didn't notice Bird having any problem getting around, and I don't recall the subject of his knee replacement even coming up during the meal. I just didn't think about asking him how he is doing because he looked and acted so normal. If it's any measure of how well he is doing, neither he nor I had any problem negotiating the buffet's steam tables to fill our plates with goodies.:D:thumbsup:

Jim, I didn't tell you but about 3 days ago, I told Margaret that the night before I was out walking and saw the smallest Chihuahua dog I'd ever seen. So I stopped to pet it and got down on my knees to play with it. Then I rocked back on my heels and suddenly noticed I had both knees bent all the way and it didn't even hurt. So I got up thinking of how great it was that it was suddenly completely healed.

And then I woke up and realized I'd been dreaming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, yep, it'll still hurt if I bend it too far, but overall, I reckon I'm in pretty good shape now.

Bird

It has been your experiences from your knee replacement that helped me finalize my decision to have my left knee replaced.

Since I have an age advantage over you I am figuring that my recovery will be as good or better :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

The magic day is Dec 27th.

Jim - thanks for your good wishes. I should have responded earlier but I started the replacement of our AC system with a new Lennox heat pump.

As usual things popped up that were not counted on but we are about done. It has a touchscreen programmable thermostat that can do wonders. I am still studying the manual.

Yeah, Vernon, there'll be some pain and discomfort for awhile, but after 3 months, I'm just going on about whatever I want to do; mowing the yard, walking the dog, even getting up on the ladder to check rain gutters, and such things. So I hope yours goes as well as mine has.

I hear the hip replacements are quicker to heal than the knee replacements. I've had two surgeries on my right knee and if it gets worse, I'll have to have it done. I went to see the hip surgeon yesterday and started down that process toward a replacement. He put three injections in the right hip and I'll know in a couple of weeks if he thinks a scope to clean it up will help, he doesn't think that is likely. If that's the case, then it'll be a hip joint replacement. Getting old really sucks because it is looking like the knee will have to be replaced eventually too, oh well seven joint surgeries in the last five years, what's a couple more.:(:(

I'll wish you luck; maybe you won't have to have the replacement.

Milkman - I fell and broke the head of the femur. The surgeon said that since there was no arthritis in the joint he could simply put a new "ball" on the head of the femur. It was a 67mm one - that is big. It healed quickly and I was up and around very quickly. I had very few restrictions on how I moved the joint. From what my surgeon said a full hip replacement would have required more restrictions.

One of my Mennonite neighbors fell off a roof and broke the ball off his femur, they were able to reattach it and he's doing just fine, of course he's about 30 yrs younger than I am. Sounds like you really got lucky with yours too. The Dr. didn't go into any restrictions with the replacement, just said that it is an instant relief from the pain, of course there's healing from the surgery and therapy, at least light at the end of the tunnel.
