Backhoe Backhoe Speed ?

I've spent the past couple weekends starting to clear trees from some fence lines and am very please with the capability of my backhoe (its' a 757C on a TC33D). Now that I've got a whopping 10 hours of lifetime experience with a backhoe, I'm wondering what you guys set the engine rpm at. My manual is real specific: "start at a moderate engine speed and increase as you get better"! I've played around between 1500 and 2500 rpm and haven't seen a huge difference (one could say I'm not fast so its quite possible I don't tax the flow!).

One thing I've found out from having a hydraulic pressure gauge on my L4310HST is that full pressure is generated at any rpm, from idle on up. The only difference between varying rpms, from a hydraulics standpoint, is the amount of flow, so as long as you aren't lugging the engine and the backhoe is operating fast enough, you're running the engine fast enough. I usually run mine at 2200-2500 rpm, but I'm running a backhoe that's supposed to require 10-12 gpm on a tractor that only puts out 8 gpm; that makes the flow a little more important than it would be with most tractor-backhoe combinations.

I've got a B20 loaner right now from the dealer and I've put about 60 hrs on it. With the backhoe I have been running between 1800-2300 give or take but anymore than that and it gets jerky. The pto speed on this tractor is 2600 but its pump is up front and doesn't use the pto for the hoe.
The rpm does make a difference in speed but like Mark said its relative to the gpm flow.

Yeah, the 9.6 gpm is one of the reasons I'd like to have an L4610HST, but I'm doing just fine on 7.8 gpm, so I'm not too worried about it.

Unless something has come out since, James has mentioned there is no backhoe available for the TC45.

The manual's advice sounds good. I started out around 1500 and now run around 2000 or more. At higher rpm, some of the controls were jerky until I developed better touch. Of course, if your pump is large relative to the hoe, you'll notice less difference in operating speed at different rpm's.

Raising the boom is what seems to take the most time, and higher rpm's reduce the lift time noticeably for me. I'm happy to accept a little jerk now and then so I don't have to spend the day watching the boom raise.

What's this? New Holland has 3 back hoes available.
Flat bottom spec's:
756C: 6'0"
757C: 7'6"
759C: 9'6"
The larger models will fit the TC35/40/45.
I'm looking at the Bradco 508 and 509. The serviceman said they can mount this with the Bradco mount or they do a Ford subframe to Bradco that works good.
My understanding is RPM=volume. The only time psi is affected is when the squash plates on some pumps need minimal pressure at speed to develop psi. Should have this at idle. I remember putting a gauge on the old MF 35 to watch operating psi like Mark and killing the 3 cylinder Perkins when closing off the flow. This is a 152 cubic inch 40HP+ and would run all hydraulics well at 1400 to 1800 RPM. Older engine with different tork range than newer ones.

Went to the dealer last Thursday to look at the 759c hoe for my new 2120. It was not installed on the tractor yet but it looks very very heavy duty. The saleman was telling me they put that hoe on their TN series ag tractors.

Jim, one would actually have to try the machine and not just see it in the yard to make that statement. You don't know what damage is until you've used an industrial hoe. Rat...

Yep, a tracked hi-hoe, I think called a JD 590D, took down a house for us yesterday. It created six dump truck loads and a clean hole in about four hours. The operator smashed the house into hole, crunched up material, sorted stuff into piles; shorts for the trucks and longs requiring more crunching. Plucked things like furnaces and fuel tanks out of the hole. He also built ramps out of rubble for going into the hole and pulling down far walls. Minimal damage to a tree at the corner of the house was done, and grass, only at one corner, was torn up. There are very few nails lying around. There also was little noise. Other than the clanging of the hoe and the squeaking of the tracks, there was only a low hum from the engine. My baby tractor makes more noise. Then, he pulled our 40' construction trailer into place.

All in all, a very impressive performance, and worth every cent, compare to me poking around with my baby tractor. The JD hoe is yellow rather than green.
