Raise the bucket and the outriggers slightly so they clear the ground.

Old School: Set the bucket teeth in the ground, and use the backhoe controls to move the machine along the trench path.

New School: Buy a tractor with a "Crawl Control" (A lever that engages the tractor's transmission from the BH operator's seat.)
That is exactly what I do with my LS MT125 TLB. I just push myself forward using the front steering wheels to guide me.

I have a Massey GC2610 and have used the boom and dipper method to move, but also am able to reach back to turn the steering wheel and also push on the pedals with a three foot length of 1x2 to move either backwards or forwards. The 1x2 neatly stores in a space just above the loader controls.
