I i'm replacing the fuel filter for a Ford backhoe 555(dont know the year but is from the 80') and I having a hard time to find the element(canister kind) for the filter. I look everywhere and no luck....( even Messicks) any idea? can I clean the old one and reuse? clean it with what? kerosene? Thanks, Daniel

Probably one of the more popular (and universally hated) fuel filters used in off-road diesel equipment between 1965 and 1995. Ford equipment used them extensively, Deere and IH used them in some applications and Massey was quite fond of them. 84535312 is the current New Holland part number.

Thanks RickB....I understand now!!! the rep from Messicks gave me the same number.....the new filter goes inside the filter housing and replace the old kind....just use the bottom part, screw the original bolt and done. Another question, when I removed the fuel filter housing....should the fuel pour down freely....my only trickle little be of fuel....maybe the fuel line (or the fuel tank) maybe clogged? should I blow air with the compressor to unclog it? Thanks

There’s a fuel shutoff at the bottom of the tank. With that opened the flow of fuel into the filter head is dependent on the amount of fuel in the tank. Less than 1/4 will give pretty anemic flow. There is a screen on the inlet of the fuel shutoff. Blowing air into the tank from the filter head may blow the screen off the fitting.
The filter will come with new square sealing rings. They are different sizes, the larger one goes above the element into a groove in the filter head. The smaller goes into the bottom cup.

should I siphon the diesel from the top of tank to be sure its not blocked and the tank its clean? or should a replace the filter and try to start the tractor? The tractor was running fine for 5/10 minutes and them was starving for fuel and lose power....when I removed the filter, it was filthy.

Its probably that screen on the outlet tap?? your shut off tap is prob. clogged..
Rick has the correct procedure but kinda "glazed over" the most important part..
The oring goes UP "IN" THE FILTER HEAD.. NOT "ON" the filter..VERY IMPORTANT procedure..
The CAV P# is 7111-296 {5.00 & change} CAV made the filter assembly & injection pump..
I would "work" the shut off tap back & forth afew times to see if u can get more flow outta it..
IF NOT.. only 2 things left to do.. either back blow it & prob. blow off the screen or drain the tank & unscrew the fitting & either clean the screen and/or get a new one, they're cheap..
Good luck.

I said the ring goes in a groove in the filter head. Plain English.

correct, as stated above - "I said the ring goes in a groove in the filter head. Plain English."

I just thought the picture might make more sense,

and I'd be hunting a new/better used manifold if you have that kind of rot already!

I have a 555 and haven't been able to start it lately. It has fuel to the injector pump but not much coming out of the injector lines. I see some versions of the pump have 2 fuel lines going to the pump. One (thru a tube, part 28) on the end going in near where the injector lines come out and one going to the middle of the pump, this one looks like it's optional (parts 23, 68, etc... partstore.agriculture.newholland.com/us/AlmaTractorEquipmentInc/parts-search.html?csid=36d68e7d2246793cdecf7e5603ebd7d5&sl=EN&currency=#epc::mr53922ar493471 ). Do I need the second fuel line? what does it do? It didn't have it when I bought it.

NO u don't need that line.. {I didn't look but from your description} THATS for a Cummins engine & its an automatic air bleed system.
It connects the return pipe back to the inlet..
Have u bled the air using the bleeder screw by the name plate.?? Its a double screw.. loosen the small portion using a 5/16 BOXEND wrench & spin the engine till fuel squirts out & no air & tighten..
Put the throttle in the WIDE OPEN position.. Loosen ALL the LINES AT THE INJECTORS & spin it till fuel squirts out & tighten..
DONT burn your starter up.. let it cool between cranks..
Good luck.

got fuel thru the filter and to the injection pump, but it barely comes out of the injection lines as a drip and it doesn't fire when I tighten them up at the injectors. I've replaced the filter, injection pump and injectors. It used to fire as long as I fed it either, but now it won't even do that. Is there a way to determine if the pump is working?
