Backhoe - 3pth v Subframe Mount

My FIL has a little Taylorway 3pt on his 2810 Mahindra, which is about the same size as my L2800, but maybe a little heavier. He works it pretty good and hasn't had any trouble. I warned him of the horror stories I had read on here. I think what saves him is he leaves the tractor in nuetral and never lifts the rear end off the ground with the down riggers. When the hoe starts to pull the tractor, he eases up a little bit. I would like to have one for my 2800. I've seen some decent 6' Korean made hoes go for $2,000 on Ebay. Actually, there was a new one with a $500 reserve that nobody bid on. It was a scratched up model from shipping. Here is a link one if you are interested. Seems like this guy has sold alot of them with no complaints. Might be alright for some light digging.

MDM, is the Taylor Way the 700 or the 766?

thanks Tim

I think its the 766, not sure though. It has 6'6" digging depth. What's the difference in the 700 and 766? I know a new 766 can be had for around $4000.

The 766 is the 6 1/2 foot ,the 700 about 6.

The reason I asked is, I'm in the process of getting channel steel and plate steel to fabricate a subframe for my t/w 766..

I hooked it up with just the 3pt but don't like the thought of damaging the tractor. It felt a little too wiggly, although I could attach arms to the ROPS ..still a subframe just feels right when I think about digging into the rocky soil of eastern ct.

I will say the hoe feels very.. strong.. and I'm sure I'll be happier working with it secured properly..

I think the toplink attachment is where tha most stress is. I've thought about fabricating something to have additional toplink attachments on the ROPS myself. Something else you can search for: Koyker makes an attachment for their 3pt hoes that makes it a 5pt hook up. I've seen pictures of it. It attaches to your drawbar and has 2 extra toplinks that run up to the toplink bar on the hoe. I think it runs about $200. Surely better than the standard 3pt hook up, but subframe will always be the best way to go.

I bought one of the Korean hoes from Affordable Tractor. It's a nice backhoe, good quality and strong. The e-bay link shown is for one of the common Chinese hoes. They seem to be pretty crude. Inexpensive though.

I am not advocating the 3pt mount over a subframe mount but I do think that in certain applications the 3pt mount will suffice. When I get a backhoe my primary appliation will be stump removal (small, less than 12" dia) in sandy soil. No rocks or clay. Add some shallow excavation. In that situation a 3pt would work. I, too, will probably go with a subframe mount for insurance.

Vernon:

Digging stumps, small or large, will most likely be the most strenuous
thing you can do with a backhoe. The shock loads on the 3PH or
subframe mounts are huge. Max force is applied to roots that give
way suddenly. These shock loads can cause more damage with a
3PH mounting because of all the slop in the joints.

I saw the pictures dfkrug posted. He was making a subframe for a CK30..awesome:cool:

You said you make subframes for 2 JD 955's or 2 frames for one?

I sure would like to see photos of the finished product..I'm setting up to make one for a 770, and need all the guidance I can get..I'm not trying to suck up but the pictures looked beautiful. I am continually impressed by you guys.

Oh, buying new I would definitely go with a subframe but if someone offered me a Kubota BL4690 (3pt) at a bargain I wouldn't necessarily shy away from it. If I were to buy one I would also add the 4th and 5th braces to the draw bar ah la Koyker.
