B7500: Which Transmission Speed?

In several threads, I have seen reference to running at low speed rather than high speed. My dealer mentioned this also. This seems counter-intuitive to me as a newbie....I'd love to run faster to get the mowing done sooner....assuming that the lawn is not heavily overgrown.

Please share with me how I should properly choose between low and high speeds. Thanks.

DaRube, I think that's something you'll just decide with experience and based on existing conditions. When I had the B7100, with a 2-speed hydro, I usually mowed the pasture in high range; low was just too slow. Of course, the slower you go the more time those blades have to cut the grass, especially if it's tall stuff and the blades are not very sharp. Now with the B2710, 3-speed hydro, I do most of my mowing in mid-range. But the last two times I've mowed the pasture, after I mowed around the edges by the fences and under the trees and got out in the open and wanted to get through, I put 'er in high range and let 'er rip. I noticed my temperature gauge came up a bit, but still not to the middle of the scale so it sure wasn't working hard enough to overheat.

If by low speed or high speed, you mean the "H" or "L"
setting versus just revving the throttle, the most
apparent difference in my experience has been when
using the FEL to dig into a pile of dirt or something
that requires alot of force. Having it in "L" will give
you much more power.

There's been times when I've had it in "H" to get to where
I need to go quicker, and when I get there (ie: to my pile
of dirt), I try to dig into the pile and I start to strain the
engine without digging in to much. Just as I'm starting to
ask myself what is the problem, I remember to shift it into
"L" and I get my power back that I need.

For mowing, I keep it in "H" - when I get to the real bumpy
areas, I just let up on the hydro pedal a bit.

For mowing, you can go as fast as you can consistent with getting a clean cut and the bumpiness of your land. The only thing that will happen if you go "too fast" is that you may get a ragged or uneven cut. This will be more likely to happen the longer the grass is. Sometimes you may need to go into low range if you have hills to climb while mowing.

DaRube; think u need to experiment with all your jobs. i personally use low range most of the time, just feel more comfortable in that range, plus it don't shake me to peices on the rough areas. but when transporting dirt from one place to another i will kick her up. but remember, less speed = more power, and less wear on tractor. mho!
