B7100HST Mower engagement problem

I am looking at a 1983 B7100HST-1300 hours with a belly mower. The owner said he has problems when trying to engage the mower. it makes a grinding gear noise. I talked to a Kubota service mechanic but he said he was not for sure what the problem was until he seen the tractor. He also said it could cost up to $600 for labor and possibly$400 for parts if they had to repair something inside the case.
The seller is asking $4000 for the tractor as is. Is this a descent price considering it needs repaired?

Even though it is a HST, the clutch must be depressed all the way in when engaging the mid pto which drives the mower. If grinding gear clashing sounds still occur with the clutch fully depressed, I would suspect the clutch requires an adjustment or being a 30 year old unit, it may need replacement....I'd offer $3500 and hope its only adjustment.

I called them again and they said they tried adjusting the clutch so it sounds like it will need replaced. They said they would take 3500. I plan on looking at it and take 3200 in cash, what do you think knowing it will need a new clutch?
