Has anyone installed the B3030 alternator upgrade 'cause I am and have a question? I'm installing the alternator upgrade (Kubota) so I can add work lights. All went well until I went to hook up the harness under the 'dash.' The only matching connector on the original harness is a 6-pin one using all 6 pins; however, the new harness is a 6-pin housing using only 2 of the pins. Hooking these together also eliminates what looks like regulator - it has cooling fins and is also under the 'dash.' Does anyone know if this is the correct hook-up? (I don't want to fry the new alternator with an incorrect connection.) Thanks

The thing that looks like a regulator is a rectifier and regulator. I removed it and used the bolt to mount the regulator.

BrianW--thanks for the info, and I presume from your reply you did hook the new harness to the old harness as I mentioned (new 6-pin connector using only 2 pins to the old 6-pin connector?)

Yes, the six pin connector now only has two wires used. I had the same concerns as you, but my dealer verified the connection.

Anyone have a scanned copy of the instructions for doing the changeover?? Also..what was the approx cost of the new setup?

I have to do mine in spring of 2007....that "dynamo" is a JOKE!!

The B7324 alternator kit should be about $180 from your dealer. I don't have the instructions as mine was done at the dealers during a service. They did disconnect and leave the regulator under the dash. Too much hassle to get it out.

wow, that's cheap, the dealer wants over $500 for a new alternator for my L. that one isn't getting fixed soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same part numbers for the actual alternator. The B series part number is 16241-64012. The price by itself is $299.74 according to TractorSmart. I'd check with Messick's.

Thanks to all for your comments. I completed the alt upgrade once I received BrianW's comment about the connector issue I had. All's fine and working now.
Here's my comments answering some of the questions from others... 1. My dealer charged me $166 for the alt kit; 2. The instructions are rather sketchy, therefore my questions here; 3. I removed the original regulator/rectifier (?) from under the dash and used that bolt hole to attach the additional relay. (I got the dash panel moved away enough to work the wiring issues by removing one screw, a number of built-in clip-like attachments between the dash instrument panel and the larger part of the dash. Disconnecting the tach cable was also necessary to move the instrument panel.) Oh, almost forgot...removing the steering wheel makes moving the dash panel easier. The whole job took about 2.5 hours.
Once I get the work lights attached and working, I'll post pics.

I think the worst part is drilling out the engine casting for the larger alternator bolt. It looks like there is a bushing in there, but I could not drive it out so I drilled it out. BTW, I think the reason the six wire connector only uses two wires is because on the dynamo the connection is to a regulator/rectifier and on the alternator the regulator is in the alternator. The only connection to the tractor at that six wire plug is to the idiot light and probably a ground or switched power. Someone with a schematic could confirm.

If it is the same as the BX2230 kit, pretty sure the alternator has internal regulator. If you look at the schematic for the dynamo circuit, it puts out AC to the regulator where it has a full wave bridge split in to 2 circuits one for charging and the other for the lights(so the lights run off -12vdc). When you remove this small regulator/rectifier unit you only need the jumpers and a couple wires to the alternator and that is it.

I would like to get the alternator upgrade. So drilling is required? That would make me a little nervous too. I havent heard of anyone else talk about drilling.

I did not have to do any drilling. The parts in the kit allowed me to utilize the original hole for the lower alternator bolt. It took me a couple of minutes to figure it out though. I used the smaller of the kit's 2 bolts, the supplied spacer to line up the v-belt, and a sleeve to go into the original hole in the block to accomodate the smaller diameter bolt. All that stuff is held in place with a washer, lock washer, and nut.

Although I forgot to mention it in my origianl posts, you need to remove the original oil dipstick housing. Just unbolt it and wiggle it, and pull it out - its held in by an O-ring. The new dip stick goes directly into the hole where the original dip stick housing went into the block. Good luck doing yours.

Re the dipstick: I tweaked the bends in the original dipstick tube so that it clears the alternator, that way I can use the longer original dipstick and not have to remove the side panel to check the oil level. I learned that from a previous post here on TBN.

Thanks. I do look forward to seeing in the dark, and I hadn't thought of installing a stero, but now I think I will. (That outta thrill the neighbors as I listen to the Stones, AC/DC, Lead Zepplin, and REO Speedwagon.)
