My B2630 tachometer bounces around like crazy when I start 'er up. I can get it to settle down if I grab the back of the instrument panel cover and pull it forward. But I don't know how to get this problem to go away. I've had the covers off trying to figure out what was causing the issue and I hoped this would fix the issue. But it didn't. Any ideas?

I bet the cable is pinched or bent or something (it's a mechanical tach driven by a cable). I've seen similar problems with speedometers on cars, and it was resolved by making sure the speedometer cable was routed properly with no pinches or excessive bends. Make sure it has smooth arcing curves and is stretched properly. Anything that causes tension or slack will make the inner cable rub against the jacket and create wobbles and noise (though you'd probably never notice the noise on a tractor, it's apparent with car speedos).

By moving the instrument panel cover, you are probably tweaking the cable enough to fix the problem. So figure out what that motion is doing to the cable, and make a permanent fix that doe the same thing.

The cable may need cleaned and greased.

Thanks for all the great tips. I played around today. First thing I found was some rodent nest under the collar. Cleaned that out. Still had an issue.

Then I figured out that I could easily adjust the cable smoothness from under the hood next to the engine. I kind of thought that based on my symptoms, I should push the cable harder towards the instrument panel. But the opposite was true. I pulled a little bit of the cable out towards the engine from the fuel tank area and everything was working perfectly.

A really simple fix.
