Don't know if this is the proper term for these things?

http://www.google.ca/search?tbm=isc...&q=axle spring seats&sa=N&biw=320&bih=306#i=9

Anyway need to weld some on a 3500lbs drop axle for a trailer.

Any special considerations or prep I should do?

I am going to :

1. grind off paint from axle
2. Degrease seats and axle
3. Line up and clamp
4. Tack
5. Recheck
6. Then burn in with Lincoln SP170-T with .030 wire and CO2 (230V 3/8 capacity)

Material (seats 1/8) and axle same

7. Prime
8. Paint
9. Reassemble

Do you think I should chamfer the seat to get better penetration?

Should work the way you have it.
Bolt everything in place with weight on the spring perches then tack in place. Pull it apart and burn then as planned.

E/S

Don't use brake clean to degrease.

Will not be able to put weight on with springs as the axle has been brought to me without trailer

Should not be an issue

I did this same thing a few years ago for a guy. I placed the axle on my welding table, with crown up. Placed the seats so far in from the wheels and used a torpedo level on each seat for alignment / rotation.

He's gonna leave the existing ones in place so I figure a nice flat surface like concrete should do

Will place new ones and use angle/tubing to true up/clamp and tack

Will take pics
