Doing a project on the tractor using a 24V alt running off the mid pto.Do I need to use a disconnect or solenoid on the hot wire from the 1-wire delco to the battery? Will the batteries drain if I don't?

One if the tractor is a 12 v then you need to isolate the 24V from the 12V to begin with.

The alt if only used to power say a aux 24Vdc motor then you should still have 2 dual batteries (even if you use small lawnmower/motorcycle type batteries) the batteries need to be series together. 12+ 12- 12+ 12- then you will have 24V across the first 12+ to the last 12- points.

keep this separate from the tractors normal 12 volt system just to be safe, you can tie the ground of the tractor frame to the neg of the 24V without a problem but you should keep the 12 & 24 systems separate to avoid issues.

I got that stuff covered.Any thoughts on my question of battery drain if I just run a hot wire straight to the battery pack?

thanks

There needs to be a switch, or disconnect the wire when not using.

Thanks.I'll get one of those batt disconnect switches.I got a 60amp fuse holder and some 8 gauge wire,so it should be good to go.

Hay Locknut.. What are you useing it for ??? I'v been thinking about an electric winch logging setup for the back of my tractor..but I never thought about the charging system... "tractor has next to none".. But with an alternator off the pto... hmmm.. Gives me thoughts..!!! :D " THANKS"

A 24V/700 watt heater and 2 24V actuators on the FEL.

Winches suck up juice like crazy if you use them very much.Had an old Power Wagon years ago that had two batts and used the winch dragging logs till the motor died.

As long as a single wire alternator is spinning it has to have somewhere for the power to go. It self induces . I will start arcing to its self and burn up if the power has nowhere to go.

Ready to mount under the tractor. How do you measure belt tension?Comments on fabrication welcome-don't want this to fly apart under there:(

Used 3/16 by 1-1/4 angle iron. 3/8 threaded rod for the pivot.Changed out the alt pulley to 1/2" from epicenter.

My comment would be that the alternator needs a brace in the lateral direction (same direction as alternator shaft). Why? Because at some speed that alternator assembly will go into resonance and you will get a horrendous vibration. Back in the day, alternators were mounted on car engines this way and it caused all kinds of problems. Stiffer is better.

Thanks.I can squeeze the belt together and see some movement.A brace from the top of the adjustment arm over to the opposite rail should do it.

All the one wire GM-delco's I've messed with didn't need one. Wired straight to the batt.

When I said this I may have misunderstood, I thought you meant a single wire that excited the alternator, not as in one battery cable wire alternator, like below.

If this is your alt in the pic, this wire diagram is correct.

I went ahead and wired it straight to the battery.Got it up and running and it's smooth as silk. With the batteries run down a little and the heater on high it's pulling 40 amps with the on line induction meter. The digital tach says the driveshaft turns 2664 RPM at full throttle,so the alt is twice that with the 5" pulley.

So far,so good :D

Some more pics and a vid.Vid's not so hot.All I had was my flashlight.

Looks good but I would check the belt tension after some run in time.

where is the best place to shop for items like the shafts (both the splined and the PTO jack shafts) and the pillow blocks etc...

thanks

Here's a good place to look, just type in "kubota" in the search box and there are a couple of shafts, also a good place for the bearings.
