One thing I forgot is the rod quality has a lot to do with the finished product. If the rod you were using wasn't stored correctly in a rod oven, and moisture got to the shield coating, poor or no shielding would be provided. This would cause a lot of globbing and excessive spatter instead of a good concentrated shielded weld puddle...

I wanted to thank all of you for your replies. I was using 6013 rods by the way, (typo, sorry about that ;). )
Anyways, i tried again on sunday night using DC normal polarity. I was getting very good results on the horizontal beads. I was not very good at all when it came to doing the vertical (maybe i should have used the 6011 after some more reading.). Everything kept dripping off and i was just getting a bunch of balls. I ended up going just a little bit, then stopping and allowing it to cool before continuing. It didnt look pretty but it seems to be very very strong.
I enjoyed it so much im going to buy an AC/DC stick welder :). Next i will attempt to build a fold down gate for the trailer.
Thanks again!!
