Anyone want to re-sharpen drill bits again......

I've had VERY good results with my drill doctor, it took a small learning curve, and after that, I've been able to make my drill bits as good as new again...

My fil, a machinist always did his by eye. He showed me his approach and it made sense but I am not great at it. I don't worry about it. I break a lot of bits and resharpen often.

Everywhere I go and ask at work, the same thing, a grinding wheel is a grinding wheel, but my 6" Ryobi 60 &36 grit grinding wheels say different, the ones I have now dont seem to work good on my cobalt bits, just a couple swipes on the wheel and a groove is starting on the grinding wheel, kind of hard to sharpen a drill bit when the wheel is uneven, that's why I need to find out if there's better wheels for cobalt bits. Now I have to get a stone dresser, wheels are starting to get out of balance and it might be throwing the earth rotation off too, making the summer go by too fast......

I heard the wheel dressers with the wheel thingies work better than those diamond stone dressers, maybe I need to read a few hundred more reviews......

I've been sharpening drill bits, off and on, for the last 50+ years and have done it by hand as well as with drill bit sharpeners costing in the thousands.
Retired now and bought a 3/4" Drill Doctor a couple years ago. I like the web thinning capability but as far as sharpening the drill bit it, well, sucks.
I've tried every approach in the book and some not in the book but it simply will not sharpen a drill bit accurately.

I've watched a number of videos and read articles on drill bit sharpening and attempt to sharpen my dull bits accordingly. They seldom, if ever cut as well as they did when new but usually cut better than they did before I tried to sharpen them. I sharpen the bits on the fine grit stone of an 8 inch HF grinder and dress the wheels with a wheel dressing stick. Thanks to that stick the grinding wheels are now more like 5 inches. Before getting the drill press I made most of my large holes with a cutting torch. I'm awful with a cutting torch.

Maybe 20 years ago I had a very simple bit sharpener tool that read simple. Had round piece of metal bent near a L just not to a full 90%. There was short piece of metal that bolted to the grinder and the rod slide into and you raised and lowered the rod with bit in holder on it. It would handle a big range of bit sizes and did a good job. Did use stick dresser on the grinding rod. Used common grinding wheel, fine grit. Sadly loss the round rod with a move. Do have drill doctor and it does a decent job but have not sharpened a drill bit in a couple of years and need to really do some catch up.

You could buy something like what is listed below. It's supposed to get the right angle and back edge relief. I just do it on my tabletop grinder by eye. Get the angle right and spin it while gently pushing against the wheel to get a good edge. Keep it cool. Watch the videos for technique on that part which is really all you need to know. I use the finer side of my grinder but it has never been dressed in 30 plus years of use and the bits still come out sharp.
