For what it's worth, I bought a used cutter years ago, and upon inspection found the gearbox wouldn't hold oil. I fill with grease at the beginning of each season with no problems.
I think this is a common "fix" for beater bush hogs.
It seems the heat will melt the grease.
The corn header grease seems the way to go as it starts out as semi fluid.
