Anyone else have an unusually large number of hummingbirds this year?

They are territorial little buggers. I have feeders on opposite sides of the house, and the rufous like the sunny side, the Annas like the shady side.

That is interesting. I might have to try an experiment. Sun/Shade and see if they react the same. Goeduck, a good experiment for you too. I am down to one feeder at the moment.

I have 3 feeders up, all in a row about 8 to 10 feet apart. The easternmost gets the most sun and the empties the fastest. So maybe there is something to what Larry has observed since right now I have more Rufous than Annas.

However, the easternmost feeder position has been there the longest, so maybe only a hummingbird knows for sure.

I still haven’t seen any hummers.

We put the feeder up Easter. Changed out the sugar water yesterday.

We had a ton last year.

Even put a few red buckets under the feeder as I understand red is an attraction.

I'm not sure what I have observed. Temperature may make a difference, or maybe the rufous hummers are just more of a nuisance to the Annas. The rufous do seem to have a stronger social connection. Last fall when they left, we had a big swarm that vanished in one day.

We got our first hummingbird today. He picked a bad day to arrive... 2" of snow this morning and a high temp of 39. But he has 8 feeders to choose from and it will be 57 tomorrow and 65 on Saturday.

Was watching hummer in a tree next to porch. Watched it go to it's nest. I have video of her feeding babies, but can not see how to share it.

It hit 70 for the first time this year - this afternoon. Wildflowers have been in bloom for a month now. Have my first 10# sack of sugar ready. Expect to see the first ones any day now. They will come to the kitchen window until they know I've seen them. Probably should just hang the feeder out now. Wildflowers are in short supply this year.

That is amazing. We have never seen babies in a nest and have only seen nests after the season is over and storms blow them out of the trees. The nests are pretty small.

My wife found one years back at our first home. After a hail storm she never found it. I noticed a hummer up on a tree and it looked like it might be a nest, looking with binocular I found the nest. The picture was taken with a sony camera with 30X zoom on tripod.

My activity has picked up again. It had tapered off when (I think) nesting started, but it is back up to 75% or so of peak. For me that is about 3/4 cup per day.

I tried to make it smaller but if I make it any smaller it would be too short. It is only 10 seconds, 20.5 MB.

Gone absolutely quiet here this past week. Fresh nectar and only a couple I have seen on two feeders. I know they are around... too many options?

Yahoo will take up to 20.0 MB's so maybe others are the same?
