Anyone build a disk, any ideas?

If you do a google search for disc harrows, you will find many manufacturer's web sites show up. Although most of these are multi-ganged, very heavy harrows designed for large commercial use and < 150 HP tractors, you can click on the specifications pages and see the detail you are looking for - blade radius, blade spacing, total weight, approx weight per blade, bearing material, angle adjustments, etc. Also, I've found that "a picture is worth a thousand words" and they help a lot, too. With all of that said, once you have an idea how you want to build it, agri-supply is a good catalog(ue) to look through for the individual parts. I would think you would want to do your actual purchasing from a company somewhere over there, though, to save shipping, since these things are meant to be quite heavy. Good luck.

Mith,
I have been saving up used brake rotors. They weight about 10 pounds each. I have six, but I think you can probably find them at a scrap yard pretty cheap. I also have a piece of 4 inch iron pipe about 6 foot long. Since the center holes in the rotors are a little over 4, it would allow me to skew the rotors on the pipe a little, and weld them this way. I could also then fill the pipe with concrete. In practicality I don't know how well it would work to just drag this thing around behind the tractor, but that was my idea for a start. It might break up some clods by just dragging, but if not fixed somehow so it actually weights down into the soil, rather than bouncing over it, I don't know how well it will work. Perhaps several of these welded to a frame with a 3 point hitch setup would work. However, unless you can scrap it for free, buying new metal to make it would probably cost more than buying a cheap new one.
