Anybody hunting?

Geez, all you guys open before Pa. We open the Monday after Thanksgiving. Just post some pics guys, get me primed up to go. I'm thinking about closing the shop for opening day, but can't really afford to lose the income.

this year I'm hunting from the seat on the tractor.

Paul, don't say that very loud as it is illegal in NY to hunt from any motorized vehicle. Heck, you are not even allowed to shoot off of a motorized vehicle as a rest.

I look forward to hunting every year but this year my hunting is going to consist of trying to find something to snack on as I sit around the house. I can walk better but I am nervous about shooting a gun right now and I don't feel like pulling a 20 gauge out and sighting it in. So this year is going to be a wash but my dad is going to take my field as it is a great spot. Hopefully he will get the buck that is destroying the trees there.

I wish everyone a great, safe hunting season this year and please post pics.

It is illegal to hunt from a vehicle here too. I did shoot at a buck leaning over the hood of my truck once. He was a long way away and popped up in a field right when I was getting out. I missed him by a mile and he trotted off waving goodbye with that white tail. Funny thing is, there was a tiny chip in my windshield from a rock. When the gun went off a crack ran from top to bottom!

Also, it is interesting how the seasons vary. In my part of SC, gun season is 11 Oct through 1 Jan. In the lower state it is 15 Aug to 1 Jan. !!! (I personally have no desire to hunt deer when it is 96 degrees outside.)

Robert,

Have you thought about photography?

I'm hoping to get Steph her first buck this year, so when I'm out hunting on my own, I carry my rifle in case something truly exceptional turns up, but I'm also carrying a camera to take pictures of what I see. No deer this morning, but the squirrels were fun to see and the steam coming off of my pond was amazing!!! I've been sitting in my blind at first light and while hoping for something to take a picture of, I've seen some amazing sun rises!!!!

Don't push the back, but if you can find a comfy place to sit and do nothing, then taking pics of the animals can be very exciting.

Morning Eddie, glad to hear you got your cat back.

Depending on what we are doing I have taken my camera with me. I might make it out this year if it is a nice day but if it is cold out I won't go (this year at least). I haven't seen any deer out behind the house since I came home either which is kind of discouraging but I know they are around. One of the bucks decided to rub one of our apple trees next to the barn.

I do get to see a lot of deer during the course of the season as everyone brings their bucks here to be scored.

I've never had any luck with carrying my camera. I either bungle the hunt or the picture.

I was in a stand last week when a little spike came out into my food plot. Looked him over real good with the scope but I had no plans to shoot him. So I tried to get my camera in place and spooked him! Now, if I'd left the gun at home I'd have gotten a good picture.

A few days earlier I was in the woods with rifle and camera and the sun coming through the fall leaves was just spectacular. Leaned my gun against a tree and started taking pictures. Got some fair pictures but didn't see a deer.

I've kind of come to the conclusion that I need to take either the gun or the camera, but not both. Most of the time I could be just as happy with either one.

Season opened here 1st weekend of Nov and goes thru early Jan. Spent 1st 4 days of season hunting hill country of TX. Lots and lots of deer in that area, but body size is very small. Passed up three 8 pointers. Saw 2 more that I think were also 8 pt. Plus several lesser points. But nothing I wanted to take. One guy took an 8 pt that field dressed at 74 lbs. Not unusual for TX hill country deer. I go more for the visiting and BSing with the other guys and just getting out in the field than for hunting any more. I can just sit out in the woods and watch and listen to the wildlife for hours. Going back Thanksgiving weekend with my son and grandson. I always look forward to that as it brings back lots of memories of me tagging along on hunts when I was just a few years old.

I don't hunt from the tractor, just use it to get to my stand and use the bucket loader to haul back the prize. I have a nice padded seat at the stand, and the seat of the 8N is hard and cold.

Be careful about using a vehicle as a rest too, a fellow here used the bed of his pickup as a rest a few years ago.
Bullit went through the other side of the bed, a piece of metal from the bed came back and hit him in the forehead. Nearly killed him!
