Anybody hunting?

Wow. That is nice. I've only got two permanent stands and they are just platforms, no roof. We have some short ladder stands but to be honest, I like sitting on the ground. I got all of my biggest bucks either sitting against a tree or slipping along very slowly. Now, maybe I could have gotten more and bigger bucks if I had better/higher stands . But I'm pretty casual about it too.

And someone mentioned that as they got older they got less interested in killing deer. Me too. I still like it. Still like getting in the woods. Still like planting food plots (which I think I would do even if I didn't hunt). But, I'm just not driven like I was when I was younger. I was just crazy for deer hunting since I got my first one at age 9. Now, I can get one nice buck and for me, that's a great season!

And maybe this year I'll put a roof on those platform stands.

Around here, we don't need to hunt.

Just turn on your car at o'dark thirty, hit the high beams, come up to forty miles per hour, or so, and watch them stare you down.

Yep, wrecked the Chevy... twice in one week. Almost the same spot too...

Anyoen else waterfowl hunting? I'm on the Pacific Flyway. Lost of members seem to be in the midwest and east; must be some on the Eastern Flyway? I have not been out yet, but plan on going a few times after Thanksgiving.

Heading out for elk next week, fingers crossed. I have put 13 grouse in the freezer, 2 pheasents,2 mallards. Those grouse are my fave. mmm mmm good. I am getting one grouse mounted i will post a pic when i get it back..

Never had grouse... is it really better than Pheasant?

I've always thought pheasant was the best eating bird you could get.

Just saw a nice 8 point walking thru the snow right past my shop. Think I'll bring the old Sako .243 to the shop. I may spend more time looking out the window than working.

Tororider - you say "not nearly enough deer". I wish that was the case around here. We have an over popluation.

I don't actually hunt myself, but have some fellows and one gal that hunt the place. Shotgun season (Illinois doesn't allow a rifle season) opens next Friday for 3 days so this has all been bow and arrow. We are all rather unhappy the no does have been taken yet, but so far 4 bucks have been removed.

Last evening one of the hunters came to the house just after dark. He had shot an 8 point buck that went into a deep ravine. He had gotten the buck out of the ravine and up into the corn field and so I went with the tractor and brought the buck back in the FEL.

We also have about an acre of chickory planted, but so far the weather hasn't been cold enough to really draw the deer.

Our goal is to provide meat for hunters and also a food kitchen in the area. But also to take some of the female deer so we can try to put a dent in this huge population.

Sorry, no pictures at the moment, but nobody has taken anything that is worth bragging about.

In NY gun season starts this coming Saturday. I have 5 tags to fill so I'm game to almost whatever comes along. Long ago my dad said the antlers don't taste very good. So don't pass an opportunity by.

This time of year the roads after dark are flat our dangerous. Too many of the buggers around.

My family isn't into venison too much. If I grind it into burger they don't even ask. So most of my meat goes into burger. I don't care as long as I can hunt.

My dad is 60. He flies up from Fla to join me. I just enjoy the experience and time to do it with him. It won't last forever. I only hope in 8 years when my son can hunt that we all can still.
