I have had their Security Suite installed in our 3 Vista computers for the past year, and all 3 have been experiencing very slow boot up times and running, which seemed to become more extreme as time went by. This morning I uninstalled the ISS from the laptop I am using right now because the license was expired, and now boot up time has been cut to about a third of what is was earlier today, and the computer runs much faster. I know security software slows down boot up time and processing a little, but the difference in this machine is amazing. Anybody else have the same experience?

Several security softwares will run a scan of the critical file structure
at boot up. Of course this will slow down boot up time. Some will allow
you to go into the settings and change to not do a scan at boot up.
I've used McAfee, Norton, and a few others, but not Kaspersky, so I am
not sure if they allow the user to change certain settings. Might be worth
a few minutes to see if you can change them and if it makes a difference.
Good luck.

The weird thing is, over the course of the year I had the license for the ISS, the computers became progressively slower and slower even though I had practically no programs running at startup aside from the Vista OS and those required for the computers to operate as well as Kaspersky. There was no conflict between the ISS and Windows Defender as I had WD turned off. All PC's are maxed out on 4GB of memory. To give you an idea of how slow they were running, the second laptop has been uninstalling the ISS with the expired license for more than an hour now !!!

i had Norton for many years and when Norton 360 came out i started having lots of problems and i had enough,i also had McAfee, for the last few years i have Kaspersky,i love it,it dont slow you down like Norton.

I think I have tried the Kaspersky in the past, but cannot remember if it was slow or fast.

I now use AVAST...it is free and updates regularly.

I also had used AVG, but something about an update one time was weird. I ended up trying to do a system restore but could not. I tried uninstalling AVG but it would not uninstall. I Googled the error / problem (for the life of me I cannot remember exactly what the problem was) and found many posts / sites where they had problems with AVG. I finally found a way to get it removed but had to go into the registry, which is a touchy area if you do not know how to edit registries.

I had kaspersky before, not anymore. I too use bloated vista ultimate. I noticed that now whenever I get slowdowns or issues with vista after many many mini MS updates every week- it would just become so flogged- I would just blow it away and reinstall OS from scratch and run updates before using and it would be fast again. no memory upgrades.

If you have Vista as your operating system, it was an attempt to upgrade XP. We did not go to it at work, nor did many others. Win 7 came out not
long after. Unfortunately, as OS's improved, 4 GB of RAM is not all that much
anymore. 1 GB used to be huge !!

If your laptop is having trouble uninstalling, then it or Kasp. has hung the
laptop and you may need to interrupt the uninstall and try again, if it will
let you.

As you have found out, with Kasp. uninstalled, the laptop runs much quicker.
So there must be a link between Kasp. and boot, which may be a file scan
on boot as I mentioned earlier. Except for DOS computers, as time goes on
computers get slower because of broken links in the registry and all kinds of
issues, regardless of what programs load on boot up. At work we just
rebuilt from scratch, but we had a standard image for all workstations and
just moved user data to the rebuilt system. Not so easy to do at home.
Good luck.

I used Norton for years. It got to where it seemed to take over the whole computer. I did some research and discovered Eset Smart Security. I have been using it for about 3 years and have no complaints. It is not free (maybe for a trial) and not any cheaper than Norton but it does not take possession of your whole computer, yet provides good protection.

I installed Kaspersky in December and January on both my kids laptops after they both got worms (daughter week before T-day, son week before coming home for Christmas). I had been using AVG on them.

One reason I bought Kaspersky was that the reviews I read (cnet, some others) all said it was the best at NOT slowing the machine down. All 3 of them seem ok to me yet.

Those reviews such as you note were also one of the reasons I chose Kaspersky for my ISS, past experiences with both AVG and McAfee ISS were very disappointing so I switched to KZ a year ago. AVG kept disconnecting the firewall andf McAfee kept getting letting rouge Antivirus products infect our computers. If I can just solve the issue with slowness KZ will again be my first choice for an ISS.

THANKS to all for your input.

i use rsky.

and yes.. it does a pretty comprehensive scan.. and that adds time. I have it on my wifes laptop.. if there is a virus on the internet.. she can find it.. 3 times.. :( thus the need for the security.

last year she complained her laptop wouldn't boot.. was fairly obvious is was malware. I installed kaspersky at 2am after a midnight trip to walmart.

something like 106 infections.. :(

IMHO.. virus spreaders should be treated like terrorists.. it is after all, a form of domestic terrorism.

and then.. um.. maybee executed or something...

I'd be FINE with that.. :|

I have use Kas for 3 years now, after I had someone take over my computer and use it as a server. Kas removed the software of the user as well. Since then I have 3 units protected by is and belive it to be far superior to anything else available at protection as well as removal. And I like the option of not having to be a IT specialist to use various software that interfaces with my modem. I simply insert the software disc, and Kas ask if I would like it to take over my computer, I say yes, and it sets up all those little tweaks, baud rate, ports...etc...Which is great for various training and testing programs I need as well as well as wife.

AGREE 100%....!!!

If the people who create malware and viruses for other people's computers are that intelligent, why don't they use their knowledge for something positive instead?

But for all I know, and I have wondered about this for some time, could the virus spreaders and malware hackers be in cahoots with the companies who market the security software, to create a need for the anti-virus in the first place?

ditto that. good software, works...

I wouldn't be too surprised to find out that was true.

maybee sell tickets to anyone who has been affected by a computer virus, and they then get to line up and smack the offender, tied to that post, with a cane or something.

after a few million whacks over the coarse of a few days straght.. maybee they will think about the purpose of the next piece of code they write... :|

I still havn't ruled out the execution idea totally though.

If I do ever run.. I'll remember to use this in my platform.. :)

thanks fer yer support. :)

I've used their Anti-Virus for the last couple years and so far so good. If my computer ever starts to run slow or act up I just go back to an eariler restore point. Think it might have something to do with updates not updating right. Both times it fixed the slow problem.
