After spending the evening at my buddies shop, he had an 04 V10 F350 in for a failed fuel rail and frozen brakes...Had 50K on it. Well maintained truck.

I looked at the motor and he said that the exhaust manifold studs had to be replaced..He refused to do it and doesn't know how they were removed. They rot to toothpick size then just break off..

Can't believe that the fuel rail needs pretty much removed to even think about getting to the plugs.

That being said, has anyone replaced these studs?....I don't want to buy a nightmare and from what has been done, and needs done to the truck I saw last night, it's giving me second thoughts on the '97 V10 MH I'm looking at.

Just curious as to what's involved...I was originally concerned about the spark plug blow out issue, but this one concerns me just as much.

Someone please calm my concerns or change my mind on this RV.

Search on Google, there are a ton of people who replace their studs. It is a common problem on the V10. Most people install headers when they do break. As for the fuel rail, I have a 05 v10 and I think that is the first year for the 3v V10. My plugs look easy to get to.

I'll do that..Thanks..Headers would probably be easier to deal with, but not sure what's available for a 450 van chassis...Have to look that one up.

Once again, I do not see these problems. Like I have said before my Uncle has had 2 V-10's, well actually 3, and I know about 20 other guys with them. My friend runs a wrecker company and they have about a dozen V-10 powered roll backs and 450 wreckers. He is not a diesel fan. I personally cannot understand it.:confused2: He does have larger International Cummins powered diesel stuff. Another friend has 8 2007 or 2008 F-250 V-10 powered plow trucks/mowing trucks for his landscape business. Of all these V-10 powered truck I only know of one that has had problems and that is a 2001 or so 2 Valve that has spit a few plugs. Never heard any of them say a thing about manifolds, fuel rails, or any other problems.

These trucks are worked. The 8 plow trucks I mentioned all have 9' Western V Plows on them plus my uncles 05 has a Meyer plow. One other one also has a Meyer plow. All of them pull big boats or trailers, 10,000# plus, all the time and a few of them make a living during the week on construction sites. They are not garage queens that come out to pull a little ski boat on the weekend only.

I am not saying it does not happen, just never see it.

Thanks...Just did some hunting on this and it appears that the manifod studs breaking are common on modulars in general, but it's a fixable thing if one has the time and patience. The studs appear to be soft enough that a cordless drill with left handed threads will back them out.

If it happens, at least I think I can get them out if needed. Gonna pull the "dog-house" on the accessory check and see what all of that stuff looks like. Can't tell at all from the front.

The upside (for me at least) was that the Ford forum I was on seemed to have the issue isolated from '99-'04. Don't know if that is all inclusive, but maybe the studs were better in '97....I hope.

I'm not bashing Ford, I hope you understand that. I'm just doing heavy research as this is the first Ford powered vehicle I've ever looked at. I had one Ford in my life, but it was Chevy powered...Hope you follow my hesitation here.

Just did the studs on my 01 excursion with 120,000 not a horrible job but it does take patients and time. If you plan on keeping the truck for awhile go to ebay and get the stainless kit its cheaper then the dealer. Good luck.

That's what the Ford forum suggested too..Ebay or Amazon..Whoda thunk on that?

I understand totally. I am the same way with other brands. What I am just saying is I know lots of guys with Ford trucks. They rule the roost around here, and I have not seen 1/10th of the problems that people say. I talk trucks and trailers probably 5 hours a day shooting the bull with customers and buddies.

I can recall what it was like changing the front plugs on my old E series.... and it was a windsor. I'm not sure how you could do the exhaust studs on a mod motor, especially if you have to drill them out. I guess you'll be investing in a good right angle drill.

I had to change the oil pan on mine. That was about 20 hours of labor. The entire top end of the motor had to come off, and that was only a few months after I bought it. :confused2:

We'll I bought it...Everything seems to work well in the coach...Ran the AC, fridge, furnace, all of that and all is good. Will have to buy a new deep cell and some misc sensors, no big deal.

Of course it needs manifold bolts and after removing the dog house I found that this will be a challenge to say the least.

Really surprised that Ford got away with this one given that the fumes could actually kill you while driving and this is pretty much a guranteed failure with Ford modulars...Go figure.

Looking into Banks Headers now...Manifolds gotta come off anyway.
