another newbie innovation...

I built this contraption er attachment, out of ABS pipe, and duct tape to string deer fencing without a second pair of hands to help. It worked quite well. I'd like to know how others have dealt with it? I think the same arrangement may work for wire fencing if one just just metal pipe instead of plastic...

Nice! May I ask, where did you purchase your deer fencing?

the fencing is Deer/Bird fencing and as such a little lighter than some other that I was considering. I bought it locally. Don't know the maker off the top of my head but next time I'm on the farm I'll get the info. That's a 300ft roll 7ft 6" high and weighs maybe 40lbs. fairly light stuff. I hope it lasts since it's not cheap. I think it was $170 per roll.

If you do find the manufacturer, it would be great help. I found no one around here had anything like this...I had to go to New Hampshire (actually my sister was there) to find some very, very lightweight deer fence that I stapled to 8 foot posts around my nascent orchard (got to use a borrowed post-hole digger on my tractor). So lightweight is it that it tears out of the staples in a really high wind. So as a backup I installed two rows of electric fence as well - at knee height and browse height.

The other weekend we went out to the farm, without the dogs, and I got to see what we are dealing with in terms of deer. In the early a.m. there were 18 deer in the field - all outside of my fenced-in orchard, but grazing on the grass.

Your 40 pounds for 300 feet is a lot heavier than the stuff I got...which is is more like hair net for a giant. Since I am confident I will be in the market for new fencing after a few storms, your source...and your innovation for installng it ...would be very helpful. Places here are willing to order, but need to be told what to get. Thanks.

Sometimes it helps to staple through a thin piece of wood. Works like a washer to spread the load past the material in direct contact with the staple.

Are you using the deer fence around a garden or something else? Have you tried other things that did not work or is this the first time trying?
I am planning on putting in a hedge that deer like and would be interested in what others have used to keep them away. On the other hand if there are limited resonable costs availabe I may change my selection of hedge type.

Jim, Rozet - Thanks for the bookmarks...I sent for a sample to see how much heavier their fencing might be. The idea of battens to hold the net to my posts occurred to me, but of course I had no battens the weekend I was doing this project. Laziness being what it is and since the fence sort of stays up, with only occasional need to haul out the stepladder, I have not organized to buy the 25 battens that would be required. When I go back out in a few days I am sure I will wish I had been better organized. A friend once told me, "Any job worth doing is worth doing twice....."

I know; I know. I'm just being a wisecracker because one little letter in a typo sure changes the meaning of a sentence. I'm sure your method actually scares the deer and anything else that gets caught in it. How much fishing line does it take? I bet you have to buy several rolls to "wrap" a garden.
