In regards to the noise volume on these mowers - air flow creates noise and lots of it. A high performing mower deck creates a lot of air flow (you should see the specs on the newer Gravely Pro-Turns). Money and engineering can quiet that airflow down to a certain point. This is not a $8000 tractor, you're not going to get the engineering comfort of being quiet, but you will get the benefits of air flow. The cut will be great, clipping dispersal will be great, and bagging performance will be great.

I wouldn't recommend these units get run at partial throttle just to keep the noise down. They are designed to run full throttle. Air flow pulled by the cooling fan for both the engine and transmission are designed to operate at full throttle. Putting a load on and building heat at part throttle will prematurely cause problems in the long run. You may not have an issue now, but you won't get the amount of hours out of the machine that you should in the end. Shrug your shoulders, call me stupid, that's up to you if you want to, but don't ruin a good thing.

Well, it's managed to survive a full day of brush mowing with SWMBO the Destroyer. She hit a large (mostly buried) rock and got hung up, so she stopped the blades and backed up - which disconnected the mower from the front support. Didn't keep her from mowing another hour and a half, until she stopped near me to chat. When she started to leave, it sounded wrong - so she shut it down and I discovered the issue. Took about five minutes to finish dismounting the deck, check it over, remount it, and get it back to mowing. No damage whatsoever, didn't even scratch the paint.

I bought the mulching plug kit and a set of Oregon Gator G5 blades. Once we get all the tall stuff knocked down, I'm going to install those and see how it mulches. So far, we both are very happy with the machine.

My GT got hung up in 10g wire and a junction box it unearthed in some tall brush last week. Wire got wrapped around the left blade, killed the blades and tractor, the junction box was mangled and I found pieces of it 6-10ft away from the mower, had to untangle the wire from the blade. Checked over the blades to make sure they weren't damaged, started the tractor, engaged the blades and kept mowing.

Surprisingly the blades weren't chipped up and were still sharp-ish, they cut good but have dulled down some since the beginning of this season.

I'm using just standard blades. Amazon.com : Set Of 3 Blades Replaces HUSQVARNA 532 18 72-54 532 18 72-55 532 18 72-56 : Patio, Lawn & Garden

SWMBO flagged me down while I was mowing with my flail today. She was mowing the neighbor's property, in a ravine, 18" tall thick grass. Got caught on a large rock, then the mower didn't want to run with the blades engaged. Raised the deck and sent her to the shop. Put it on the HF jack and started looking. Right blade had lost 3/4" off each end, middle was 1/2" short on one end and so loose it was completely freewheeling, left blade was worn but still usable. Broke out the new G5 blades and installed them. Also greased the spindles. These blades are excellent! The mower is still loud, but much smoother. Cut is better than when it was brand new, and leaves dust behind instead of cuttings. Next it gets the mulching plug installed.

You should post pics of those blades or what's left of them lmao, she must have ran that deck for some time on a rock to do that kind of damage, that's not easy to do lol.

Good to hear the new blades are working well.

Twice the amount of cutting edge, carbide insert on cutting edge, very high lift - really work great. Turns leaves into mulch and I haven't installed the mulch plug yet. About $36/set on Amazon.

Usually the sharpest blade is the weakest, I wonder if the G5 blades will survive much more than chopping grass.

Seems to work well on saplings. Heavier than the original. If they don't last I will try the G6 ones - they are a quarter inch thick.

Wonder if one of you GT48DXLS owners could measure a "deflector UP" width of your mower. I have one "coming" but am a little concerned about width for my storage shed. I believe my doors are 56" wide...fully opened. I do need to continue to use it to store the new GT. Oh ya...maybe I need to build a new garage :) Thanks...TMR

With the deflector all the way up I measure 50".You should be good to go.

I wonder if you could post the part # for those Gator blades.I don't want to buy the wrong ones.It looks like 595-087 but I'm not sure.

Did the 8hr service on mine today. It's hot here (high 90's) so I followed the Kawasaki recommendation and put straight 40 in it. Went ahead and changed the oil filter, as I always do on oil changes. Cheap insurance. Added a foam pre-filter to the air filter, and blew out the air filter. It is certainly easy to service. Greased the zerks and installed the mulch plug, which quiets it down considerably when mowing. I'd already installed Oregon G5 Gator blades, and I really like them.

Mowed some steep slopes that I'd avoided so far this year - they'd been cut prior years with weedeaters - a long, hard task with heavy grass on steep slopes. The GT48 climbed extremely well, except in a couple of spots where burrowing rodents had torn up the hillside severely. Had to back down twice, but never got completely stuck. Very steep, mounds of loose soil around holes, 275lb operator, and turf tires - not a big surprise that I had to take those spots from above. I'm going to investigate alternatives for rear tires - I'd like to keep the power hooked up as much as possible - but I may just mow those two spots top-down until I can address the rodents with a rifle... :)

All in all, I am very happy and impressed with this machine. It exceeds my expectations every time I challenge it. It chews up twigs and brush without complaint, and the deck is very stout. The powertrain is excellent, it handles very well, and the manually-locking differential adds a great deal of versatility in my application. This feature is not commonly found in lawn/garden tractors, especially in this price range. There are several offerings with auto-locking differentials, but I only found two with manuals.

Great review.I just got my mulch plug but haven't put it on yet.My only complaint is a small problem with the steering. When I turn lock to lock there is a spot where it locks up briefly before it pops.I've gotten used to it but it is probably something I should have the dealer look at. Other than that it is a great machine.

Spend a buck at HD and get a bag of 5/16 coarse nylock nuts. You will definitely need one on the front bolt. I splurged and got two 1/4" flat washers and used those, too. I also removed the chute, since it's useless and in the way....

You will double the traction with ATV tires similar to this one:

Good Morning Teachu2...about 6 hours on my GT48DXLS and as you have reported it continues to impress. Very strong...I have mowed 18"+ tall, thick green weeds and while the motor feels a bit labored it quickly clears itself and handles the weeds well. Occasionally leaves an odd standing tall stalk but with what I am mowing that is understandable. I also do not discriminate against small brush and it handles that well also.

SO far I have been stuck 4 times :) Twice in wet clay as the tires "loaded up" with clay and were like "slicks". Had to pull it out...locked diff no help when traction in rear tires is near zero and terrain is uneven. The other two times I was stuck on dryer ground and the locked diff quickly supplied relief. Wet clay is terrible.

Couple of questions...

1) I have operated last two lawn tractors for over 25 years with rear wheel weights and chains...never removed either. Only stuck once during that whole time...hung up on the deck trying to cross a small stream :) Dealer is brand new but thinks he "heard" you could not add chains...due to tire clearance??? It does look tight.

Are you aware of anyone who has added chains? Is there such a thing as a low profile chain?

What about better traction tires? Maybe HDAP like JD 5xx series has??

I have pretty much used in each of my mowing areas and the traction is my biggest problem...I knew that but had hoped the diff lock would be a solution. Either need chains/wheel weights or perhaps better traction tires. However, I think the wet clay would nullify other traction tires also?

2) With my use I have learned that blades/spindles and belts are often the "breaking" point as I use my mower as a quasi brush mower. I think I need to add a front end mower lift as this deck is likely too heavy for me to deal with...particularly for blade sharpening/change which I need to deal with pretty often. As long as I use blocks to support frame for safety I assume I can reach under and remove the blades for maintenance?

3) I see you changed to Oregon mulch blades. I do not bag but have no strong reason to mulch. The new mower is a monster at blowing the clippings...and does not seem to clog up at all. My concern is blade strength, holding an edge and high lift for blowing out. I know I will dull...both on heavy weeds and sticks as well as glancing off rocks, small residual stumps and dirt. I like the performance so far of the stock blades but wonder if there is a stronger version that would perform the same but maybe last longer between sharpening and other damage...ie heavier duty blades (that still throw the clippings as well).

BTW...I am actually a little nervous and watchful as I think some may have issues with damage from stuff thrown out the chute. Most of what I do has nothing to damage from thrown debris and I usually am out alone. I LOVE the power of the dispersal of clippings, small rocks, twigs etc but would not surprise me if they modify the chute in the future to deflect a bit more...or other solution.

4) Soon will be looking to do the 8 hours oil/filter change...looks like straight weight 30 will be my choice as we rarely see 90F+. No synthetic oil for straight weight I don't believe? Would not a multi weight xx/30 or 40 be a good choice? Any problems with oil filter change out? Do you have the filter number handy?...I don't see it in the Kawa manual.

I view the problems I have had with the mower...primarily getting stuck...as my usage issues. I suppose it is possible I may need to "pay up" and get either an x590 or perhaps an x7xx (with all wheel drive)...or other and mower. Perhaps I need to stay away from my clay areas...that and this has been a VERY wet year here in Northern Minnesota. Time will tell...I now know what it won't do :)

Appreciate reading your inputs...TMR

BTW...I have learned that even when coated with mud it cleans up pretty good with a quick hose washing and then mowing all my rough surface terrain...now clean as new (well almost)
