Would like input & theories on why my JD 870 is losing power.

My problem occurred Friday while I was using it to scoop up some dirt for the yard. All was well and going down a slightly declining part of our rock road to go for another scoop. I heard what seemed like an instantaneous clash of steel. Before, during and after this, the engine didn't sound any different, stutter, die, and heard no grinding noises. I continued to work without apparent issue for another 30 min or so. After stopping and turning around to return to the house I suddenly could not get any power in 2nd or 3rd range at all; the tractor tried to turn the wheels but they just wouldn't roll. I was able to limp, and I mean that in the weakest sense of the word, back home in 1st range.

So yesterday I replaced the primary & secondary air filters, and both the fuel filter at the tank and engine. Found the old air filters were just ok but the fuel filters, especially the one at the fuel tank, were pretty much showing their time was up, lots of artifacts in there. With all this done & as before, the tractor is starting & running normally. Engine sounds good but is still only able to roll the wheels in 1st range. RPMs look normal per groundspeed as well as I can tell. Thought about trying to verify the speeds I can get JD's chart on the fender but haven't tried yet.

Some background on my tractor is that when not in use, we've been holding down the clutch with a large "C" clamp to avoid the clutch/flywheel sticking problem some (including us) have occasionally been blessed with. Wondering if that may have any piece of action here?

All thoughts, comments, suggestions, questions, & theories are welcome ... short of a miracle, I'm thinking a very expensive JD hospital visit may be in the near future...

Your symptoms indicate a possible slipping clutch, not a low power issue. The metalic sound you heard, could it have come from the clutch area inside the bell housing? Dos the pedal have any noticeable difference free play since this incident?

Harry in KY,
Although I haven't had time to start on it, I believe you're correct!

The metallic sound did seem to come from the area of the bell housing. The clutch petal also seems softer than before and now doesn't seem to have two "stages" when depressing. No burning smell.

Its been so hot here lately that I put it in the garage to work on tomorrow.

Thanks for your quick reply too! Will advise results...

Back after a family emergency; my wife was hospitalized for almost two weeks but has made a full recovery.

When this adventure began, my clutch petal was very firm with essentially zero/very little play.

My latest update is that I've adjusted the clutch so petal is within spec & the tractor is a bit better; can run in 1st or even 2nd range somewhat but 3rd isn't practical. Unable to adjust clutch further. So, the tractor is still unusable. I'm assuming I'll need to find some for pro or semi professional help.

Went by my local JD dealer today. He wasn't exactly forthcoming with theories, possible or potential interest and clearly no prices for anything. So will be shopping around ...

No theories forthcoming from dealer is quite understandable, because your explanation about what is happening is so very confusing.
Sorry to hear about your wife, and good to hear she is now okay.

It does sound like the tractor will need to be split and then inspection of the clutch problem will reveal what has failed in your clutch pack, and hopefully then a straight forward repair or replacement of parts. Likely clutch pedal adjustment alone is not fixing some failed parts in the clutch pack.

Are you prepared to split the tractor yourself to inspect the clutch pack ??

beenthere,
Nope, while splitting sounds like the appropriate next step and, while interested, I'm not equipped or up to stepping into that adventure.

And after yesterday's local JD experience I'm decided to take it later today to a JD shop a bit further away. It was there several years ago for something, don't recall what. But in talking with the mechanic then and working with the shop in general I remember it as a good experience.

Thx beenthere

Unfortunately, what took place "several years ago" may no longer apply. These days it seems all too many dealer shops have digressed to the point where little to nothing gets done in a timely, cost effective manner, and much of the hired help is sadly lacking in both attitude and aptitude. It might be worth your while to revisit the shop, look around, and evaluate what you see and hear.
