So what happens in an earthquake where there is uplifting? do the bridges just fall apart?

they did in the San Francisco and LA Earthquake. I was amazed in LA driving around seeing the force on the freeways, they went from smooth to buckled in seconds.

I guess I don't get it but why didn't the truck seperate from the trailer. I would think that the pin would be the weak link in all the other mass being moved in this wreck.

Carl

Just a guess at the physics involved, but...

The pin didnt feel near as much force. It only had to hold back the inertia of the ~18000lb tractor. NOT the trailer.

Since BOTH the tractor AND trailer were moving @ the same speed, the trailer and trackhoe (which combined outweigh the truck by about 2.5x's) had their OWN inertia which equated to much more force than the was seen by the pin.

So in a sense, The pin only had to stop the tractor itself, NOT the whole rig.

But I do agree that it is pretty suprising that it stayed hitched.

Wonder what the driver said while it was happening???

Probably something to the effect of, "Boy, my hood ornament sure is cold against my nose."

I love when stuff like that happens - hilarious. Impressive how the dipper folded in half.

Memphis has all the new cable restaints installed to hold the bridges in place. They are not bolted down on one end? for expansion. They just spent another $300 million on putting Ball-bearing rollers under the Mississippi river bridge{big M} , as it is a major crossing for east to west travel and defense. This is a lot more than the bridge cost to build, the New Hwy 69 bridge was cancelled by the current administration, but really is needed here.

Someone's assuming the driver was at error, but we don't know that for sure. A number of years ago, I checked the sign posting the clearance on a McDonald's underground parking and drove in. Within seconds there was a whole lot of noise when the ladder on my truck's roof ripped through about sixty feet of aluminum soffit material before I realized what was happening and stopped. This was witnessed by a cop. "Just the person I need", I told him. He noted the clearance was posted as 7' 6" when it was actually measured at 6' 7". McDonald's gave me a wad of vouchers in consideration of the paint scratches on the roof of my beater truck.[/QUOTE

I think that is a pretty safe assumption. He hit a stationary object. Anything over 13'6'' needs a permit, (at least in MN). Then anything (not sure the height) needs a "pole" car to drive in front of the truck and make sure there is clearance for the truck. Even if the boom came up while driving down the road, that is the drivers responsibility.

Bottom line is the driver is responsible for the load.
