1998 John Deere 770
Hello. Still reading manuals about my new (new to me) 770. Apparently this tractor was sold with an optional rear work light. Anyone have one? Does it require any electrical modifications? Are they still available? Pictures would be neat if you have one. Thanks!

I added an after-market rear light to my JD 4300. Found the wires in the harness under the seat and connected there. The ignition switch all the way to the right takes down the blinking lights and is set on "field position" with includes the rear light powered.

Here is some wiring schematic for the 770 that I believe shows the ignition switch at the top and the flood lamps (labeled optional) circled in red. Shows a red/black wire coming from the switch to one side of the lamps and a black (surely ground) off the other side.

Yeah, the lamp is the same one used on the 790's and 3005's.

Your 770 should have the wiring harness and connector under the seat and there is a hole in your fender (just aft of the flashers) to accomodate the work light.
IIRC, the worklamp kit (includes instructions) cost $40 at the Deere dealer. The lamp harness just plugs into the existing connector.
Takes about 15 minutes (including reading the instructions...which I do since I am not an electrical wizard) to install.
I put one on my old 670, then moved it to my 790 when I traded up. Hardest part is fishing a wrench up between the tire and the fender...bit awkward.

Have you purchased the service manual on CD-ROM yet? Price is about $50.

Yes - I bought the service manual, parts manual, and operations manual on CD. I've read through the ops manual, but not yet the service manual (it's 1000 pages long). Lots of good stuff in there. Thanks for the price point on the light. For $40 I'll order that.

For $40 I'll order that.

I bought mine close to 10 years ago, so don't be too surprised if it's a few more dollars now.
One thing I could never figure out was how to replace the bulb...never had too (even after 7-8 years), but it's nice to know that kind of thing. You might ask the parts guy about it.
I used my worklight quite a bit as I prefer to plow snow during the wee hours of the morning (less traffic to worry about when clearing the end of the drive).

i simply bought 2 new 55 watt halogen farm tractor halogens for my old 870.....same design and electronics as the 770.

i then proceeded o plug them into the harness as described above. they have always worked fine for many many years.

they come on with the second indent on the existing light switch.

you don't have to go with JD's own work light.

Nick,

Here are some picture of the work lights I installed on my JD770. I bought the rear work light from JD. It was about $40 and included a wiring harness that plugged into the existing black connector on the left side of the tractor just behind the seat (see picture).

Since my loader blocks the front lights on the tractor when it is raised up a few feet, I bought a work light for the front too. Instead of buying the expensive JD work light, I bought a Blazer work light from Advanced Auto Parts for $15 and wired it into the existing black connector on the right side of the tractor just behind the seat. I mounted the light up on the ROPS with a piece of metal I bought at Lowes and painted JD green (See picture). I used the existing bolt hole on the ROPS so as not to drill into it.

If these lights burn out, you replace the entire lens. The bulb inside the glass lens is not accessible. The lens pops out of the front of the plastic housing.

Bruce
