John Deere 4310
I have seen many posts of problems with batteries on 4310s.
I have a 4310 with 75 hrs. I checked my battery yesterday to see if I anything looked like trouble. I can see a little corrosion (white build-up) on the radiator close to the top rim of the battery. I have not taken the battery out yet to check for other potential problem spots but was bummed about the one small spot I saw. Should I contact the dealer yet or see if it gets worse? The last thing I want is to mess up my cooling system. I plan to take my battery out tonight and investigate further.

Deere05,

It can't hurt to contact your dealer and let them know your concerns. Has the white build up penetrated the paint on the radiator or is it just on the surface? I would suggest at a minimum that you clean it up and touch up the paint as needed. But first find out what your dealer thinks.

I don't know if it penetrated the paint or not. I had to change out a mower belt on the lawn mower instead of dealing with the battery tonight. Time is short when you have to work for a living. Hopefully tomorrow I can check. If I need to paint it would John Deere Black do or is there a specific paint for radiators? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif That is probably a stupid question but if I didn't ask then there would surely be something special that I SHOULD HAVE used.
I will call the dealer regardless.
Thanks

I took the battery off this evening to check the amount of corrosion on the radiator. There is a 5'' X 1'' line that runs along where the top of the battery rests against it. The battery is a Strong Box Hibernator. I tried to remove the white corrosion powder and the part of the radiator fins that are affected break off. I have not called my dealer yet. Any ideas as to what they will likely say and is there a "permanent" fix for this problem if I got a new radiator and battery? I would hate to have it fixed and then it happen again. Especially after it is out of warranty.

The very best fix is a truly sealed battery like the Optima. Yellow top is the recommended solution, but the 51 is no longer available. There are several other brands, someone posted a battery from Sams..

(BTW Deere offers a battery that looks remarkably like an Optima...)

Could it be that you were inadvertantly overfilling your Deere battery? I think I may have been./ It seems like all my trouble started after I topped mine off...

Up in Racine Wisconsin there is a battery store. Never saw one before, but this place only sells car and other motorized thing batteries. Sorry, but I can tell you where it is, but don't remember the name. It is on the road in to SAM'S CLUB.

They have a complete line of sealed tractor batteries. Also, Highway C Service, a DEERE dealer, also sells sealed batteries. The dealer I bought my tractor from said none existed, but this dealer has them in stock.

I'd love to know why some dealers are denying they are around and others stock them.

I will ask about a sealed battery. I have never added water to the battery yet. If it was overfilled it was done at the factory. Should this be a warrantied problem? What about the radiator? Should I be concerned about future problems with the radiator if left as is??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm a Lifeline battery dealer. If someone can give me the exact measurements I will see if there's something available. All Lifeline batteries are AGM (absorbed Glass Mat) No acid.

I have a 2001 4300 and had my oil cooler fail because of the battery corrosion. JD fixed it under warranty because they failed to discover it in a warranty service two weeks before. They replaced the battery with a sealed yellow top battery. All at no charge.
