My father was killed just checking out a new tractor on my uncle's farm in 1959. A steering pin broke and he overturned into a ditch.
When I was nine, I was trapped between a barn door and the barn by a crazed momma sow that was intent on killing me. Somehow I slipped between two gate rails and escaped. When I was eleven or so, I was reaching into a grain auger trailer and got my sleeve caught. Luckily, my uncle pealed me out of my coat before it sucked me in. Looking back at it, I guess I was a lucky kid.
Just last year, I was trying to free a stuck QA handle with a cheater pipe. The pipe slipped and the back of my hand struck the corner of the QA plate, doing pretty good damage down into the places that you're not supposed to see in your body. I still have a problem using my thumb on that hand.
Be careful out there!

Thanks for posting that. It's good to be reminded how quickly a program can go south.
I have survived so many stupid stunts on the farm, with horses, cows, dirt bikes, street bikes, trucks and muscle cars ... it's dumb luck and the grace of God I ever made it to adulthood. Now that I'm old, and miraculously still intact, I tend to be over-cautious. I figure at this point I've used up 8.5 of my 9 lives. :ashamed:

At the age of 57...with a two year old son (my first boy)...and watching the stuff he does, I'm surprised there are any males living after the age of ten!

I recall reading that farming is one of the most dangerous occupations, bit I am not sure I that is more so because of the nature of the work, or because those engaged in it don't practice safety. Did anyone notice in the beginning that it said "Most accidents are preventable" and I have long felt that the vast majority of accidents don't just happen, they are caused. For the vast majority of my career, I moved and delivered heavy freight, operated big trucks loaded with pallets weighing a ton or more, drove forklifts and ran power liftgates and hoists, but because I was careful I never had an accident that I caused but I did witness a LOT of them. I only had two close calls...one time a semi skidded across the centerline and hit my work truck head on, and the second time a tie rod end came off my brand new '77 F 100 because the cotter pin wasn't installed. Fortunate for me, it was in a parking lot.

This just reinforces what I've often seen as a "contributing factor" sited in many a military accident review board - "did not follow proper procedures."

Good reminder. I've been doing construction and using power tools for 20+years. While very stressed and over worked a few months ago(building my own house,running a business,wife having 3rd baby in as many yrs, teenage son,etc)I got in a hurry and
just a finger tip but I'm kinda fond of it.
I keep on top of my employees about safety but after so many years I got sloppy/stupid in a hurry and put my hand under the saw to catch a piece of wood.The piece hit my hand and reflex my fingers closed into the blade.I am very lucky to have any fingers.IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU.

Experience with machinery should give us some security but others working around you can be oblivious to the dangers. So how would we feel if they were injured or worse. We have to ensure its OK you know "fool proof" even to ourselves. We have all had a "wow that was close" incident and that was your warning. Question that and see how that can be fix and we will live longer. When ur sitting in the seat be scared.
