PT-180
Hello all,

Figured I'd come to the experts to get some advice. I am currently considering the purchase of a PT 422. The principle use will be mowing approximately 2.5 acres of wooded pasture, and 3/4 acre of lawn. I'm leaning towards a PT product because of the price (vs. Kubota or JD 2210), especially with all of the attachments I could get for the same money. Landscaping and general farmwork (fences, horses) will round out the rest of my time on it.
The pasture land has several low-hanging oaks, which leads me to believe that the front mounted mower will be much more nimble than a center or rear-mounted on a standard CUT. The land is in Georgetown, TX, and the pasture is moderately rocky. My concern with going for a PT 180 is that the engine will get overworked, especially when temps get in the 100-degree range. I also don't want to spend the extra for the 425, as it seems too much for my needs.
Please let me know your suggestions/recommendations concerning my needs. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the wonderful family of TBN and Power Trac owners.
From what you said, the 422 should work very well. What will your needs be in say 2 or 5 years down the road? That should help you with the decision between the 422 and 425 series. As you read the PT threads, you will see many from me regarding the 425 and how hard I have been working it. This machine never gives up no matter what task I have put it through. The 422 will give you the same performance.

HI Ill give my 2 cents. I have a 425 which I highly recomment. My wife & I have 4 horses & a landscape business & love all the PT does for use for both. I didnt go with the 422 because of robin motor. I have run kohlers for 10 years now. With this said PT is the best choice. You wont mind when the wife gives you a list to do. My advise to you is put fully synthic oil in the motor of any tractor you choose. The oil wont break down in your high temps. I live in NY & still use it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif O ya the the extra money on the 425 give you a canopy. You need one to keep the sun off you & you ll need somthing to hold on too. The PT is pretty fast & bumpy a full speed. Good luck

first off, welcome.... now the 422 will do anything you need to do from mowing your grass, get the 48"deck to cleaning your stables, get the 48"10 cu.ft. bucket. now the robin engine,is as good as or better than the kohler.it comes with a forgedsteel crankshaft forged rods and rocker arms. it is even heaver than the kohler.so i wouldn't worry about it!!
they have a sale on the 422 right now take advantage of it.i would jump on it soon with rising cost of steel and gas, this 422 cuts my grass almost as cheep as my old 12 hp. gravely did /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yesterday Tazewell only had one PT422 sale item left, it has a B & S engine. I forgot about the sale, just don't like B & S no reason , some people like them, that's why the world keeps turning ! ! ! !

Giving the canopy thing some thought for summer use. Does the canopy become a perfect "black body radiator" of heat when it collecting all that energy from the sun? Is it too hot to touch in the summer? Anyone think of painting them aluminium silver on top to reflect the sun?

I have the canopy... I'd rather have it than not. It really is very shady under there and I've never know it to radiate tons of heat back at me. I like that is is dark under there. It really helps.

jack, yes i am,and it is great!!! the only problem is the cold weather starting.when it gets down to 15 degrees it will not fire....jim

Just two cents worth on the canopy colour. David, you can keep it dark on the underside, Tim, aluminium/silver as a heat reflector is actually gray, the only 100% answer is Gloss White.
In the very early dayus of Auto Air conditioning, I used to love taking people out on the lot, between a black and white car, and have them place a hand on each. Quite a shocker to some folks !!

and if the heat is too much of a problem you could always get that ceramic type of paint which has a r-19 rating to keep you cool the name of it is supertherm but its not cheap .........i think ill just move a lil faster on my 425 and /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gifkeep the breeze blowing

I painted my PT-425 ROPS Canopy and Engine Cover with Valspar Anti-Rust "Satin White" Enamel. The white looks good with the black and green. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It adds a hard gasoline resistant finish to the Engine Cover, which is needed because the new PT-425 has the gas filler on the top of the Engine Cover and the PT black paint will spot or wash off with gasoline!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I just painted the exterior sides and top of the Canopy with white. It reduces the Canopy temperature significantly, matches the other finishes, and adds antirust protection. (I have since repainted all the black areas of the PT with "Satin Black".) /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Remove the plastic canopy trim. Apply two coats of enamel with a 2'-3' ROLLER. It's quick, leaves no brush marks, and produces a nice "hammered" finish. Dry for a week, and replace the plastic trim.

Hey, as a bald man, I completely agree! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I am NOT "bald"!! I have a "shaved" head!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif (Although part of my scalp that I shave doesn't really need it!)

Just between you and I:

A bald man is a victim! He really would rather have hair, but doesn't! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif He looks old, and worn bare!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

A shaved head says that that is the way the man like it! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif It looks younger, and he is more vital, perhaps even phallic!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

So, if you are bald, accept my condolences. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But, if you have a shaved head: "Right on!!". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In response to the above, I recieved this email:

"" I have been reading power trac posts every since they started and you
have just posted the only rude post I have see till this day. I don't
know if you take constructive criticism well. But if it helps just
write back and say something rude to me. Its ok I won't mind. I just
hope you didn't hurt moss's feelings, he was only agreeing with you. ""

I have replied:

" ???????????????

I am advocating the advantages of a shaved head!!!

If someone is balding, they should strongly consider shaving. It is a positive step in response to what is often considered a negative problem! Before I began shaving, about 20 years ago, I was the target of all the usual asinine bald jokes. Not any more!!! When someone starts off in that direction, they soon learn of their error!! As I said: "I am not bald, I have a shaved head!!".

On TV, bald men are belittled, laughed at, viewed as "over the hill", or treated as if they have a disease worse than terminal cancer! When was the last time you saw Michael Jordan or Telly Savalas viewed in this way??!!??

I sincerely hope that Mr Moss, though apparently thin haired, is less thin skinned than you, and saw that I was expressing a positive, not a negative, message for anyone with a tonsorial deficiency!! Like most things in this great country, shaving your head is a personal option available to most people. Try it, you'll like it!!

PS: March is a good month to begin shaving! The head has nearly no tanned areas, and the shaved area will quickly blend in with the rest of the scalp as the Summer tanning process proceeds. "

PPS: I use a Norelco Triple Blade Shaver, which only takes 5 to 10 minutes a day to do my whole head, watching out for my eyebrows and lashes!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Good for you!! I knew that anyone with a PT instead of a JD must have an independent streak a mile wide!!

Are you developing a rotund profile to compliment your 'do?? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Does your wife mind living with a Friar?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Maybe /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif is just sad because someone made a non-PC comment, and he doesn't know how to be PC: shave bottom - grow top, grow bottom - shave top, grow both, or shave both!!!! Hopefully, he will learn to just say ,.!.. and do what is best for himself!!!!

Meanwhile, back at the Power Trac Forum: I am using and customizing my new PT-425. I am beginning to post my /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif thoughts at "PT-425 PROS & cons?".

Yes, I'm considerably rounder than when we met ... about 75 pounds rounder. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif She must not mind, 'cause we've been together for almost 25 years! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
