Adjusting steering gearbox?

have a 1641 cub with alot of play in the steering wheel. can gear box be adjusted or is it about shot. would like any helpful suggestions.

If it's a recirculating ball type it may be posible to adjust. Don't know anything about yours though. Mine is just a locknut and screw type adjustment.

Just finished rebuilding the one on my Kubota B7100. Made a lot of difference.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM, BUT WOULD APPRECTIATE ANY HELP THAT I CAN GET. PLEASE DESCRIBE YOURS TOO ME AND MAYBE I'LL HAVE A BETTER IDEA. WHERE WAS THE ADJUSTMENT LOCATED? AGAIN NOT SURE IF ALL ARE ABOUT THE SAME.

Picture of recirculating ball steering gear. There are different variations but all are basically similar. Dropping the ball bearings on the shop floor is a preresiquit for working on the gearbox!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Think maybe the library has a book which includes Cubs. When I was there could not remember your tractor or find the Chilton's book with a better picture in it.

Hi..I have a 1864 and it too had tons of play in the steering. I found the adjusting screw was missing it's jam nut and had backed way out. In the diagram in the above reply I see the jam nut but the screw is out of the picture..Find yours,loosen the jam nut and adjust screw in and turn wheel till it gets a added drag in it and little or no play..1-2 inches in the wheel and tighten jam nut.Don't /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif forget to grease the box. there's a grease fitting on it.
