But they still insist on writing a $2-3000 check instead of a $2-300 check and monkey with 4 bolts....

This is true.

And it's worth knowing too, for those questioning the decision, that the unit is very old, has weld cracks in the supports and in the stump jumper and as it is over 90 inches wide has always been difficult to maneuver around trees in the planted stands. Because of this we forewent some internal mowing of stands needing burning and hardwood control on, something that a heavier duty and narrower cutter will allow.

I should also mention that hitting the base of a pine while mowing will often allow beetles in which will kill that tree, trees which are OUR CROP.

Spending heaven knows how much......and the time to do it that could be spent on other productive behavior ( got some culverts that need cleaning out ).......and ending up with a unit that is still old and still marginal for what we were doing with it did not make sense.

I do appreciate the constructive suggestions I usually receive here when asking questions.

Some people really do have a very narrow field of vision and find it impossible to consider anything different from how they see or operate in this reality.

Like saying, I think someone would be oh so foolish to discard some broken electronic device, rather than perform circuit level repair. Helll, it's probably just a .39 cent SMT chip!

The insight given was what tipped the scale. As I know I do not know everything I need to know, it helps to get ideas and insight from others' experience.

By any chance, had you heated the end of the shaft to remove the nut & jumper? If so, you may have case hardened the shaft and it became brittle.
