LS 3038H
All, I am a novice so please go easy on me. I am also without my normal mechanic that has to usually get up to speed before working on LS tractors...so I have no one to get advice from.

Can someone tell me what the first arrow is pointing at? What is its function?

Secondly, on the second arrow, what am I missing? A cap?

Sorry for the dumb questions...

This is an LS G3038H and the photo is "forward" of the fuel injection pump. Within the plane of the accessory drive and belts.

Unless I'm missing something, I'd say that's where your oil goes, and you're missing a cap. I'd change my oil if I were you.

Do not run the engine until you replace the cap, clean as much sand out of the opening as possible with shop vac, and change oil and filter. Very possible that grit is in your crankcase.

curtthegreat and RustyA, thank you both!
That is what I was afraid of. I never changed (filled) the oil through that port. I only used the port on top.
I will immediately change the oil, filter, and get a replacement cap before I run the engine. The owners manual (and part manual) were real vague about what that port was...I assumed it was oil...

Thanks again,
Steve

My Montana with Mitsubishi engine has same setup...normal oil fill in valve cover plus this setup near front cover. Cap was just friction fit rubber and after a while just disappeared. LS wanted blood for that rubber cap. I installed a variable size frost plug made of rubber that expands as you tighten nut on top of it. That was many years ago and it's still in place. I always used valve cover cap to change oil too.

When I first saw that post, I was thinking oil fill port. But I was like: "No. That cannot be. Mine looks like that though, but on the other side. Really hope that not the oil fill port. Don't see any threads though. That's really gonna suck if it is the oil fill port. Where is the cap?"

So... sounds like that is the oil fill port. Time for an oil change. And I might do it twice. Drain the oil and change the filter. run it for an hour, and do it again, just to be mostly sure the majority of the grit is out.

Sorry man and good luck.
