To renege there had to have been a deal. There never was. Just idle insinuations that were never confirmed. The failure of this deal falls squarely on the OP.

This is what I don't understand about political correctness. That is a comedian who is a green Martian can make fun of green Martians and people roar with laughter. But let a purple people eater from Venus say "Green Martian" and all heck breaks out!
My family is the United Nations. My father in law Cherokee. He was a fantastic Dad to my wife, Dad to me, WWII soldier, list goes on. He could have received lots of government perks being Native American but wanted to be known as a person.
I'm 3/4 British, 1/4 Scottish...but neither me or anyone else should give a rat's fanny!
My F.I.L. could care less if someone said Indian giver. People says things because it's fast, easy, understood meaning.

I did learn something which is if I want something I need to say let's get it right now...or here's a deposit, give me a receipt I'll bring balance when I get it in a few hours (after all...it was sight unseen).
Never assume a handshake or yes I'll take it, etc, is enough.
A simple written receipt is legally binding.

I've lost track of the number of times I've found myself in this position with something for sale. So in idle conversation I say "I'm gonna sell my widget for a gazillion dollars". Someone says "I'd love to have it". I am in no terms obligated to sell it to them. The burden of closing the deal is totally on them. When I get no follow up conversation toward closing the sale I take it as an idle insinuation. :confused3:

Since gazillion is not a real number, next time say for a million dollars. That way you have some chance of collecting :D

There was a time way back when a simple handshake was considered a binding agreement between people. It wasn't a question of legality, it was an honest man's word and gesture.

Back when men were men.

We didn’t even have that here.

Re: abrogator? Post driver!#%@&

Yes, thinking about other people’s perspective is a good thing, despite being subjected to occasional ridiculous sensitivities.

Regarding the negotiating term. Reminds me of a friend who went to court to seek damages to his car. He wanted blue book value. Judge asked him what did he pay for car, which was less than blue book. Friend tells judge: “Shouldn’t I get market value of car and not be penalized just because I *#$ed the seller down and got a good price?”
Then he looked at the judges nameplate. Don’t remember the judge’s last name, but it might of ended in ‘stein or ‘berg. Oops.
That's funny. Hopefully instead of being offended, the judge realized that guy just learned something the hard way.

If you dont know anyone like that (in your small world) it is not possible to offend them.

Yes perspective is important.

....However, looking further, if it were me, I'd just use renege. The guy reneged on the deal (although it isn't real clear if he even remembered he made the offer to the O.P.). And good grief, don't go off on me about the possible misinterpretation of that word.

Yes, reneged is a good word, but I'd be VERY careful calling someone a "renegar"! (Yo! What's up my renegar?!")

Note: You can only call other people renegars IF you are a renegar yourself. Sorry, those are the rules!!

(P.S. Upon reconsideration, I may take this rule back.)

The other thing I learned from all this is in 1876 Custer was defeated at the Battle of the Little Bighorn by abrogators!

Can we get rid of the brand sections in the thread while we’re at it? That’s obvious segregation. Possibly even racist.

I just saw the post about the leaf vac. Great! Bob is for real!

I had a neighbor on the Board for a golf course. Kept saying they were replacing their Vermeer Diesel Chipper and WE could get it. He would pay and I would store and maintain it. I held off buying a chipper, in the end, for a few years. Then he spoke about Electric Gators. NOTHING ever happened. This man just likes to TALK! But, I will surely remember, if he needs or wants something.

It's USUALLY when someone dangles an unusually sweet carrot in front of you that you loose your objectivity. Normally, I would never go in for a shared deal, but this "seemed" to good to be true. As for the OP. I am really, really surprised at the outcome. But, why is BOB selling stuff for next to nothing?

Your deal certainly didn't "seem" too good to be true. It was.

It's a long story about Bob but basically he and his wife went w-a-y over their heads to buy this fantastic place.
I wish I could post pictures but I respect their privacy. The place came complete with an amazing amount of stuff. I understand their reasoning was to sell off everything which would reduce price and mortgage payments.
The prices are guesstimates without research. Today I helped him a little bit and he wanted to buy the leaf vacuum back! Somehow a landscaper found out about it.
Oh! And the post driver may be a Cinderella story after all. The buyer will be using it not far from here and after Bob told him how much I wanted it he said I could use it!

Wow. If he is strapped for money, why is he practically giving valuable stuff away? Weird!

Some stranger that doesn't owe you anything is going to let you use the pounder? That's all very weird.

Now you got me thinking. That is weird!
I'm racking my brain to figure out the answer. Only thing I come up with is Bob is weird!
I agree with you.

I certainly hope ol' Bob actually owns all the equipment he is selling so cheaply.

My Dad rented this place out in the 70s to some unfortunate people. They defaulted on their rent and we heard from neighbours that they tried to sell my Dad's tractor. Desperate people, can do stupid things.
