:D

Don't feel bad.. i have some blue fuel jugs for my tractors as well..

Your tax dollars at work, they tell you how and what to do for just about everything now. Orwell was right, just a bit off on the timing.

I just picked up one of the 5 gallon yellow cans at HD for ~$9 after tax, it's the new kind with the vent in the funnel, it is slower, but I'm legal now!

Remember reading that is school and thought how dumb! Now, it is just scary!

And JSR, that Waly World in Pinetop carries more of the politically incorrect items. Could not find a good can down here is the Phoenix area.

I still have a couple 6 gal plastic fuel containers(cans)from probably 15 years ago with the flexable spouts that I definitely will not part with.I know you are supposed to use a blue or yellow can for diesel but I've simply used a magic marker and designated one of them for diesel. In a word; those new unvented containers "SUCK"

I have also had a bit of a problem with the new cans leaking. I have not had a big problem with it but once in a while. I do admit that they are a bit slower than the older ones with the vent hole. I do however love the fact that they have the handle on the side as well. It is a lot easier for me to move it in place with a handle for both hands. The diesel tank for my montana is located right next to the step into the cab. It is a nice height for filling. When I had my MF 65 the tank was at the top of the tractor. I got a cheap electric fuel pump for a car and attached hoses to it. I put one hose in my can and the other one in the tractor diesel tank. I had my electric cord made with battery charger clips on the end of it. It might have taken a few minutes longer with that method but it was nice not having to lift that container to the top of that tractor.

Ditto on not liking to hold a can way up high for a while. The fuel cap on my NH 7610s and ford 5000 ar on the top of the hood.. and the tractor is high enough to need a step to get up to the op platform.. thus you have to use a step ladder to fuel the things when using cans.. etc..

In my shed are two 5 gallon galvanized saftey cans that I aquired 27 years ago and they are the absolute best. They have a flexible steel spout on them and the gas doesn't come out until you pull the handle back. I have seen similar ones in McMaster for over $100 each.

I agree the new ventless style are a pain to use and then the ones where you have to push the spout in to get gas out is even worse.

I'm going to buy a good drum pump that can be used for kerosene and fuel then fill up a drum of each for use.

Love the new NASCAR type spillproof cans..

I now spill more fuel than ever!

I'll second the army jerry cans with two reservations.

1- The old metal ones are painted inside. The paint flakes off and tends to clog petcocks and bends in the fuel line before it hits the filters. I've picked enough paint clogs out of my tractors that I threw out the metal cans and bought some newer surplus plastic jugs.

2- The newer plastic jugs are, I've come to the conclusion, sent to surplus when the bottoms get too thin for reliable use. Hold the buggers up to the sun or an overhead light if you think you want one. I bought a bunch without checking and after punching a hole or two in the bottoms and making a mess I learned the hard way.

I've now got a bunch of reds and yellows of various designs and can't stand the "gurgle and splash" or "gurgle and drip" variety. Our local designs are better if the vented spout is aligned correctly but not as good as the old design.

Fastest method for pouring fuel from the old-style 5gallon cans that I've found? Drill the vent hole under the small rear cap to a larger size. You'd be surprised how much of a speed "bottleneck" the air suction is. Remember to remove the plastic drillings from the inside of the can before pouring, because those curls and bits can clog petcocks/etc as well.

I have an old red one with vent.

i have a new yellow one with out a stock vent. (notice i said stock... is supports one now)

but i dont use it much anymore sence i moved to a 15 gal tank with attached hose and car type cap. i put it up on a shelf about 6' above the tractor and it gravity feeds quite nicely.

I have found that siphon pumps work best ...hoist can up once onto surface above fuel tank, one or two pumps and siphon empties can/jug etc. Little siphons sold for kero heaters work okay for short cans ...I use a barrel pump siphon cut to accommodate my taller jugs ...one hoist, no spill, no gurgle, no problem.

Don't use them to store diesel fuel in.
There is a chemical reaction between diesel and galvanized that causes the galvanized to separate from the can and mix in with the diesel resulting in pollution of the fuel.
Those cans are ok for gasoline but for diesel you need to use plastic or steel.

I'd like to get a seperate 50G tank and mount it to the frame of my dumptruck with a small transfer tank pump to fill my machines. I hate 5G cans, none seem to work well.

Ok to close this out I took some pics this weekend. Ventless gas can 101 I guess. :D Once you get it up..all you have to do is balance it and wait, and wait, and wait. :D

It really must be something to make a product that everyone hates but has to use anyway.
