I don't see this as politics, maybe I'm wrong but I think we have reached a point in the United States where we may just go the way of the former Soviet Union. There is such a disparity of views, culture and morals existing and growing exponentially between the states that I see a time in the not to distant future where the country may break apart into several regions with no more federal government. States rights have been so diminished so as to make a joke out of the intent of the constituion and its framers. We well may end up being 50 seperate states who all just sign treaties with each other and share the expense of a joint defense force while each maintaining our own State controlled Armed Forces...Just a thought..

Brin, I have to disagree with you here. I don't think we will be seceding from the Union again for those reasons because the different cultures, views and morals are too well integrated into our society and it is no longer true that one section of the country holds one view and another section another view.

There are opposing views, morals and cultures in each state now which you can readily see in any national election where each party gets a large share of votes in each state with one usually just narrowly beating another. America is not as regionally divided now as it was back in the 1860s.

The division is more clear now in certain parts of each state, such as the largest city in your state versus the rural area, than it is nationally. And the person with the different views may just be your best friend or neighbor.

So, the answer is, "no". I didn't suggest that anyone should fund basic research. I asked who funded the research you cited.

And I told you that it was likely you, as a taxpayer! :) Thanks, by the way. I'm not directly funded by research monies at this time, but many of my "customers" are.

History is being made right now and our future is now ! We shall see. Thanks for your opinion.

Brin,

I'm afraid Georgia has some similarity to California....you might want to secede but leave Atlanta in the Union, like many Californians would like to leave San Fransisco and LA to their separate fates.

Here in Missouri, lots of rural citizens would be happy if both St. Louis and Kansas City could somehow be carved off into the adjacent states.

I remember studying the War of Northern Aggression and thinking that the southern states did indeed have the right to secede. The north won that argument, and "clarified" the Constitution.

Every few years we get to try the other side's ideas for a while. Overall it seems to work out.

Here's a theoretical question. IF the poles, glaciers, and Greenland are melting, and it was NOT man's fault, would mankind be able to do anything to prevent it?

If a frog had wings could it fly?

Chuck - I hope you are right..but I see a divorce in the making...Time will tell.:)

And, there's that hole in the ozone layer, and the coming solar storms, and the ice age, and the sky is falling! OMG! We're all gonna die!

I think I'll take the long way home. :p

Before the end of this century, 3 billion humans are going "Home" and scoffing ain't a goin' save them.

If the average age of a person is 70 years, then more than 6 billion humans are going "Home" before the end of the century!

You just can't help looking on the bright side, can you? I just hope cremation doesn't catch on too much. Think of it! Either we use lots of fossil fuels to produce even more CO2, or we use up all the firewood! And the smell! I know from experience that burned us smells a lot like my favorite pork barbecue, but if you know what's being cooked it kinda spoils the appetite.

I once worked in a lab where a guy was drying rat carcasses in a vacuum oven. It smelled like baked chicken....but I knew it wasn't.

My hunch on the "could we do anything about it anyway?" question. If the cause was the use of fossil fuels it seems that we could have a positive effect. Now in the real world, what's the chance we would do this globally?

What would be the down side of less waste of nonrenewables and development of more renewable sources of energy? Are there forces out there who would lose money as we go in this direction. A down side of solar power is that the corporations can't put a meter on the suns rays.

kevindsingleton-are you implying that the governments research to protect the general well being and safety of our citizens is not constitutional. How many of the federal agencies would exist in your perfect country?

I'll not post again in this thread (so bait me all you like) but I have to leave with this observation. I've noticed a significant propensity on the part of some posters to quickly resort to name calling and casting aspersions toward posters who ask them to document or account for statements they make. Most who do that seem to have, or be close to, the same position in this so-called discussion. The position of some seems to generally be "think what you will, but don't try to impose your position on me or my life". The position of others seems to involve a need for everyone to agree with their position; those taking pot-shots at people seem to come from this group (though certainly not everyone on that side of the issue is doing this).

That's just how it looks from where I sit. Let's see how long it takes for someone to criticize me for this, or respond sarcastically to this post.

Don't kid yourself. Laws can be passed that require you to put a meter between the collector and the main panel. They tried to do that around here with people on wells a few years back. Wanted us to pay the local water utility for how much water we drew from our wells.:confused2:

Not implying, at all. Read the document, and tell me where you found "truth seeking" as a Constutional power of the federal government. According to my reading, since it's not explicitly mentioned, it's reserved to the states, respectively, or to the people. Can't say clearer than that.

How many federal agencies would exist? Almost none. Definitely none that are not explicitly created by the Constitution.

In case you can't tell, I support the rule of law.

We can argue about human imaginations like "propaganda", "misleading", "religion" and a zillion other topics concocted in the human mind but irrelevant in Mother Earth's bigger scheme. What is important is the fact that the poles, glaciers, and Greenland are melting. That's tangible reality no matter how much some don't want to believe it.

Well, check this out

Nice. Drop in, dump your load, and then challenge everyone to avoid responding.

Where I come from, that's ...less than honorable.

Let's see if you can live up to your high and mighty principles, and not respond. If you can't, then I'll challenge you to defend your statement that "think what you will, but don't try to impose your position on me or my life" is anything but the American way.

Ball's in your court, your highness.

Seems to me I often disagree with LMTC, but he hit this one straight on. Your silly, swaggering interpretation of his reasonable remarks provides a fine support for them. Gonna look him up and punch him out now? And, of course, my reply to you also fits his description of the play on this ridiculous thread.
