dear Soundguy, was I ever thrilled today. I ran some sae 80 through the relief bolt and started cranking. It did not start, but I knew it as pumping as oil was coming out of the tubes at both ends, at the gauge and at the other end of where that tube ends - I forgot to tighten them when I first checked to see if oil was squirting out. I also so some movement of the gauge needle, maybe 3-5 pounds. I had read someplace that you should see it but did not understand that till now. What is occurring internally when cranking it over that causes the pump to work? I guess I thought the engine had to be running.
I was really nervous when I started but got up the courage today. I'll start a new thread on getting the tractor started. thanks for your help on the oil issue - hope to hear from you on my starting issue. cfb

well.. think about it.

when the engine runs, the pump spins.

when you are cranking hte engine you are using an electric motor ( starter ) to spin the engine.

the 'spinning engine' is the key.

yer oil pump is driven off the front main..

if you were superman enough, you could put her in neutral, engage the pto, and grab the pto shaft and spin her by hand and make oil pressure and spark.. ;)
