I'm looking at purchasing a used 855 or 4200. Is there anything that sets one apart from the other? Are there any known problems with a model year of either tractor that I should avoid?

I'll be mowing 2-3 acres, plowing an 800' driveway and doing some FEL work.

Thanks for the help.

The 4200 is about 1000 pounds heavier than the 855. If like me you don't want too much weight for mowing over a septic field on clay soils, you'd want the 855. Also, the 855 operates in smaller spaces. While they are similar in HP, the 4200 is more machine. More loader and 3 pt capability etc. I have not heard much bad to watch for on the x55 series. They were pretty well liked. (I have a 755). There have been a lot of gripes about the 4000 series, particularly a front axle problem. Search for that and you will read how to check it out. I think most of the gripes have a cure.
