Hi, i posted in this thread but haven't heard anything back yet...perhaps because its an old thread.

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/171692-jd-790-front-end-problems.html

Anyway, i'm on the verge of a 790 purchase...think its a 2001...has 300 hours.

Given the concern on the front end's durability that some have raised, I'm just wondering if there are any good tests that would give me an idea if the front end has been abused?

My only thoughts were to get it in a low gear in 4 wheel drive and make some tight radius turns and listen for any driveline noise?

Any insight would be great as i could close on this thing within a day's time.

Thanks!

Don't know of a "test" per se, but also don't know that your "thoughts" would reveal a problem if there was one.
But doing it would give you some satisfaction too.

Also, from reading TBN, I've not noticed the 790 having a particular pension for front end problems. Talk to your Deere dealer and see what they say.

Seems 790 owners are quite happy for the most part.

thanks for the reply! Actually, that particular thread i've linked seams to show several people who've had front end problems. some one was nice enough to also respond with their experience and what they remember for symptoms shortly before theirs failed.

Thanks again! I'm hoping to seal the deal ASAP.

Good tractor.

The 770 that I have has a 54" bucket. I say this is a good fit for the tractor and front axle. A 60" bucket may intice you to overload the axle.

I always use ballast when using the the FEL and I suggest you do the same. The tractor actually likes a Deere ballast box full of cement. Super for traction and performance when loading up at the gravel pile.

The 790 is a classic compact tractor with lots of power in a small frame. Real nifty around the yard. You're going to like it... a lot.!!

What are the tasks at hand.??

Hi there, and thanks!

a ballast and wheel weights are high on my list.

Tasks...oh boy...where to start! rocks, driveway maintenance, field work, brush hogging, moving and smoothing topsoil, rocks, stumps, logging, pushing snow...and sprinkle some more rocks in there and you get the idea. So that means all I needs is a stone boat, york rake, backhoe, logging winch, tire chains, ballast, and disc harrows! oh...and a place to put them all. :D

And don't forget the box blade, post hole digger and chipper.:D

oooooo.....you're right....i've always wanted a PTO chipper...ever since i used to be the 'human skidder' feeding a 3 cylinder diesel Bandit for about 8 months chipping brush with anything else seems like a joke.

but actually, if we get the 'woods road' all dozed out i'd love to keep up on the wet spots with chipping top wood into those areas....
