Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Been busy with work and not getting much shop time in lately. Never did get the cover off the rockshaft. Either I'm missing something or its stuck more than I'm comfortable prying or pulling at it with out some confirmation from someone more experienced that its just stubborn. I do have the tech manual and removed what I think is everything its telling me to.

I did remove the cover from the shifter area and discovered a potential problem (curiously, it hasn't been one up to this point). This may force me to figure out the rockshaft cover after all.

I haven't used the tractor much over the last few years so details on shifting aren't fresh in my mind. The only thing I can recall is that putting it in Park sometimes required the slightest movement of wheels to get in there easily. I'm talking about so little it may be normal and has nothing to do with the damage inside.

I'm going to guess that it will be recommended I replace this piece since I have nearly everything removed in order to access already. Even more important would be to try to fish out the carnage dropped to the bottom of the trans. Replacing the shaft is definitely under the category of repair types I haven't done before but one has to start somewhere.

Also, while I have the cover off I'd like to get the crap cleaned out. As TxJim mentioned, the rings are difficult to remove so I just planned to clean from the inside out with some carb cleaner and compressed air. Any warnings or advice to the contrary?

The broken part is the shift rail. The only way to replace it is to split the tractor and to remove the rockshaft housing. A new one will not help going into park, but it can make it more vulnerable to jumping out of park. There is also a spring that is missing from the broken area. It is possible to weld the piece back on if you can find it. Many times the broken piece will be damaged from getting caught in the pto gears as it fell down to the bottom. Check out parts 19 and 25

I did think about welding the piece back on if it could be retrieved in good enough condition to do so. However splitting the tractor may be more than I'm up for right now with out help if its not a "must do". I've never had any issue with it slipping out of Park or giving me the impression it was wanting to. I'm on the fence with this one.

Over the yrs I witnessed several of those brackets welded back in place. IIRC replacing the detent balls/springs when R&R shift rail can be a real challenge.

It's been many yrs since I've seen the inside of a JD utility tractor clutch housing. Would you please explain to this old codger what pto gears are in clutch housing because I don't remember any in the CH as I was thinking pto gears are in trans case?
Thank you,Jim

Fished the spring on the first try, no luck on any other pieces.

Same shift rail is broken on my JD 2030. First time I split the tractor it was broken. I replaced the shift rail. Next split, broken again. Never gave any problems, so I have not repaired the shift rail since. I also do not have to worry about installing or removing that spring (not easy for me, the spring)

Just to rear of the transmission pump is the PTO drive gear, below it is the PTO driven gear.
