If the engine sounds like it's under load you have clutch problems. Expensive. Check the oil and smell if burnt. If not shift fork has been jammed or bent, pretty easy fix.

What I meant was this. Ordinarily, the range transmission is behind the gear transmission. Forward/reverse functions are taken care of in a reverser or by a countershaft in the gear tranny. Sounds more like an issue in the differential.

He could be shifting A-B pretty hard without barely using the clutch.
