7264 PTO not engaging

Got a friend with a 7264/mmm, was mowing and heard a minor "clunk" and PTO stopped working. Went over and looked it over with him....the PTO selector doesn't seem to be able to move the lever on the trans to the "2000" rpm position.....I adjusted the round nut on the rod that engages the lever but no luck. Playing around with it, I got it to move to a point where the rear PTO would spin freely, and another position where it's locked up.
Anyone seen this, or have any ideas? Is it locked up or binding in the trans? The PTO will not come on in any position. The light comes on, but no spinnage.....
And no service manual, so unknown troubleshooting ideas. Anyone?

My pto also will not engage. My tractor had a wiring fire and burnt all the dash and switches up. It still runs good. I see the plug going into the PTO clutch at rear of tractor on right side. If I supply a hot wire to it should it work or how could I test it to see if the clutch is still good? It does switch from rear-both and mid pto and turns do to small drag but does not turn fast. Thanks....also looking for replacement electrical parts.
