Simplicity Legacy
Hi all,

I'm in the process of doing some repairs to my Simplicity Legacy (see Simplicity Legacy w/25hp Kohler Command running really rich). I have the muffler off it for the first time since I've had it, and, well, there's an awful lot of loose metal in there. :ROFLMAO: I went to see what a replacement would run (P/N 1719787SM) and it's $700!!!

Does anyone know of a source for a muffler/exhaust in reasonably good condition for the Kohler CH25S on the Legacy?

Looks like that one is special. There are some less expensive ones on amazon that fit the ch25 series with different outlet locations. Maybe have to fab some pieces to get it right?

At least when I was a younger, there was always at least one guy who was real good at custom exhaust fab at the local Meineke. I had them moonlight a few hotrod jobs for me, after hours when they weren't dealing with their usual work. If I had a custom job like this, I'd be asking at the local offroad/speed shop if there's any such local guy, in your area. I'd bet you get the new muffler assembly made for under $300.

Check out this thread. This guy has a lot of Simplicity parts that he needs to sell -- you can read it for yourself. Maybe he can help you out.

There was a guy on here very recently, trying to unload a garage full of NIB Simplicity parts, from an estate.

I went to replace the muffler on my Ford 1100 back in the early 90's and it was over $500 back then. I went to a tractor boneyard looking for a different part and found a 1210 with a muffler on it that looked "pretty close"! I ended up having to make an adapter to mount it to the engine because it was a slightly larger version of the correct one.
To the O/P... straight pipe it!!!

MacinDude have you checked out the Farm Fleet stores there in
Wisconsin? The one in Fond du Lac Farm Fleet has a very large
selection of exhaust parts many years ago maybe they still do???

I once needed a muffler for a Craftsman lawn tractor back in early 2000's and they wanted $400 for it back then.
So my small engine mechanic made a new metal box, welded the head pipes to it, filled it with steel wool and it worked great and was quiet.

If there is just a hole in it find some asbestis to cover the
hole and put a tin can or some metal over to hold it in place
and hold this in place with some large hose clamps

I love my elderly Yanmar tractors. Replica muffler assemblies are available and are under $100.

But today at 40 years old neither needs its muffler replaced.

I thought I read that the muffler assembly is needed on a small engine or otherwise the valves can be damaged by heat?

Is the muffler assembly like this? Amazon.com
Yes, it's very similar to that. That'd probably fit the engine, but it'd melt my hood. LOL

The original Simplicity part has an exhaust pipe that comes from the side of the muffler, not the end, and extends down to just below the front bumper, exhausting forward.

Now, since I'm not exactly going to be entering this thing in any tractor shows I could probably just take a hole saw and punch a hole in the side of the hood where this one exhausts, if I can't find the original part.

Looks like that one is special. There are some less expensive ones on amazon that fit the ch25 series with different outlet locations. Maybe have to fab some pieces to get it right?

Sadly, I do not have the skills to fab my own just yet. I have already gained too many new skills in the course of this project! :ROFLMAO:
