6010 vs. 6011

Asked in an earlier thread but didn't get an answer. Probably was buried in other info.

Anyway, I've been told that the 6010 rod is one of the best for repairing farm implements that you don't have the time or opportunity to really clean up. My machine says it won't run 6010 but that it will run 6011. My machine is a Lincoln MP210.

I notice there is an Everlast machine that has an additional plug specifically for 6010. It is more expensive than the one that runs 6011 and 7018.

What is the difference between 6010 and 6011, other than 6011 will also run AC?

Would there be any good reason to spend extra money just so you can run 6010?

Inverter machines either don’t like or can’t run 6010- that’s why it’s contraindicated by your manual.

6011 is fine. For field repairs both are good. Someone is trying to split hairs between 6010 and 6011- for field repairs.

Good old 6010, commonly called red rod in the welding field. Most professional welders "cut their teeth" with "red rod". Cuts through rust and penetrates deep. Couldn't count how many pounds of it I went through welding structural steel. 6010 root bead followed by 7018 cover passes. E6010 burns through rust and paint like no other rod accept maybe equal to it's brother rod E7010, which is just higher in tensile strength.

E7018 is an excellent rod, but you do want clean metal for smooth beads without any porosity. A grinder and a wire brush is the best companion to have when welding.

I have had no experience with 6011, so I really can't be of much help to you on that.

I was always told 6010 was for DC only,, just like 7018,,,

6011 and 7018AC will work on non-DC welders,,

I ran a 5-G open root pipe test with 6011. For the average guy here I think 6011 will work just fine.

I have read that the 6010 rods require a minimum of 80 OCV to operate properly and most inverter machines don't put out that voltage. Also they are DC only whereas 6011 is AC or DC.

Yep, I agree I've experimented back and forth and find both rods to be well suited for the same type welds.

My Inverters run both so I'm lucky that way.

There are a few inverter machines that will run 6010. I think Everlast has one and I have a Miller Maxstar 161STL that has a 6010 setting. There might be others.

My main interest in this started as I looked at Everlast welding machines. Aside from price and the ability to run 6010 rods, I don't see much difference between the 140 ST and 200 ST.

This made me wonder if the ability to run 6010 was worth the $120 difference.

If I'm missing something, let me know.

1/8"6010 and 3/32"7018 run at the same (DC) settings(around 100 amps);pipe-fitter standard for many years.
I have burned thousands of pounds of 6010,works thru rust,paint,gapped pipe joints.
Nuclear work demands heli-arc first/second pass then 7018.

I think you'll be fine with 6011. If you feel comfortable spending the extra money for the 6010 machine, I've rarely regretted buying up.

I burned a ton of 6010 and 6011. 6011 was my go to rod until about 8 years ago when I got a DC welder. Nothing wrong with a 6011. For basic farm type repairs I don’t think you would notice the difference. I honestly can’t tell you why I even switched they weld pretty darn similar to me. I just started buying 6010 because I could and have used them since.

Only if you have a specific engineering/specification need for 6010. Millions of good field repairs are done with 6011 and millions more learned with 6011 and 6013. Both 6010 and 6011 have the same stated strength and both “dig” into the metal well.

There's more built into the 200ST as far as performance capability. You get better duty cycle in the sweet spot of the 1/8" range, larger rod capability and more arc force capability, along with better arc starting.

If someone is giving away 50lb of old welding rod it is more likely to be 6010.
