580D Steering

I have a 580D with steering problems and I have never worked on this style of steering. when your driving sometimes you loose all steering to the RH and the wheel free spins, but if you jurk the wheel to the LH you get steering back. If anyone has a good ideas it would be nice. thanks

When was the last time the steering oil was changed and fkushed?

On second thought, I think you may have a power steering that works off the hydraulic pump. On the bottom end off the steering wheel may be the pump with 2 hydraulic hoses connected to it. If that is what you have, then either the hydraulic fluid is low, or you have to take the pump out take it apart and clean it.

One of your steering cylinders likely has a blown seal. My 580D did the same thing. Steering would just stop and the steering wheel will freely spin all the time. It's probably one side but I resealed both sides at the same time. Not that big a job; can be done with basic hand tools. Kits are about $25 each online.

My steering now is very positive and hits the relief valve at the steering stop.
