5740 shuttle problems

Howdy Yawl Montana 5740... my shuttle shift keeps jumping out of the forward position...i looked for a linkage adjustment...but looks like the shift shaft goes directly into the top of the shift case (no adjustment)....what do you think? thanks, RC

Welcome richrd 350 to TBN. In an earlier thread, you commented that you had to modify the shift linkage. Do you shift the shuttle tranny stopped or rolling? Has there been any gear grinding in doing this? What are the hours on the tractor? Are you the first owner? Any more info could help solve the problem. Trac

Welcome to the site! Yeah, like Trac asked and also, what year model is your 5740? Mine is a 2005 5740C. Great tractor for the money and for the money, there is no comparison.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Like anything mechanical, there are small things that can/will go wrong from time to time, but that will happen with a Porsche or a Chevy. Nice thing is, I bought Porsche quality at a Chevy price.

This is not the first problem I have had with my2006 5740. The transmission would not go into reverse last year, it was still under warranty at that time. They repaired it, it took 2 months. Now the shuttle transmission will not stay in gear. It feels that it is barely engaging in either forward or reverse. My is no longer in warranty, so I am looking for a solution as well.

Admittedly, I am not a mechanic so I have no answer for you regarding your shuttle transmission problem. I've thankfully also not had that problem in my 2005 5740C to deal with, so I have no experience with that situation either. Hopefully, someone in here can give you some reliable advice to help you get the problem fixed right.

Well I hope you figured out that the synchronizer went out. Montana will send me parts under warranty, but will not pay for labor. So I am doing the work myself. What I can tell you is that it is bad design. There is simply not enough meat to these teeth that move forward and reverse. One grind of the gears to put in forward or reverse will break those teeth off.

I am in the process of putting the tractor back together, with the $320 worth of parts, and then the tractor is up for sale. I will be adjusting the clutch to make sure that when you push on the clutch that it stops spinning. I am serious as a heart attack about the design issue I see with these teeth, one grind of putting in forward or reverse is definitely breaking teeth.

Yes the NC parts place is shutting down, they have packed up all the parts and sending them to Arkansas. The LS plant is not far from the Montana plant in NC. I have been told I may have to eventually get my parts from LS fro this tractor. Either way, my tractor is for sale!
