54'' snowplow

i just bought a john deere 54'' snowplow blade.i have a 2305 and i would like to know if anyone can tell me why they think deere doesn't offer a wider one. I'm thinking on making 72" I'm sure the tractor will handle it. help please.

60" is the MAX Kubota offers which is what I have on my Bx23.
I certainly would not put a 72'' on A Sub-Compact.

I push a 72" plow with my GC2310, no problem.

I have that plow on my JD2320 and it clears the wheels when angled and a bit more. It's not obvious, but the plow is not centered. It's offset a bit to the right to optimize plowing on that side.
You're going to buy a rubber snow cutting edge aren't you? The rubber edge is better for snow and slush, but it's ineffective for ice. The metal edge is better for ice. Don't think that you're going to switch as needed as it takes nine bolts (longer ones for the rubber edge) and kneeling in the cold wind is not fun.
Be sure that you float the blade when plowing and push the snow as far as possible to the side. You have to think about what you will be doing with the snow of the next storm.
A ballast box will improve rear traction but all that weight back there lifts the front end making steering more difficult.
If you can afford it, a eurethane cutting edge is better than both a rubber and metal cutting edge. It runs $300 for ten feet and you can't buy five foot lengths.
As far as 54 inches, I think that due to the weight of the tractor and the engine, a wider blade won't push heavy wet snow. You can always weld wings on the blade.

the blade, yet the blower wins hands down for me. Yes, the blade does
well, I use it mostly for dirt, but that blower has moved tons and tons
of snow very effectively.
Weights, and chains may definately be required, especially in that
wet slushy snow that has fallen this year. The very heavy snow
we had in Ocotber was the worst for anything to move,
and I bet as the weather gets colder, and we get more normal snow,
you will like that blower very much.
You would need more weight and chains for the blade than
the blower. You might want to have them for use with both.

Don't think he needs chains with 4 wd unless on ice.
If your x445 was 4wd it probably would not need chains when off ice either.

i live in oswego ny, the snow we've had so far this year has been very slushie,i broke one shear pin on the auger already thats why i bought the plow. i agree you can't beat the blower, however mine won't handle the slush maybe i'm going to fast

I agree with Dutch, you already have the best tool for snow removal - the 47" 2-stage blower. I live in MN and use mine on all types of snow for both my driveway and about 1/4 mile of sidewalk.

Don't know why JD does not make a bigger blade. But I made my 54'' blade
bigger by having a piece of 3/16'' X72'' X24'' rolled to fit the front of the little
blade. Then bolted it to the front. Put a 3'' strip on the bottom for wear. Been using it
for 4 winters with no problems at all. Also put 1 1/2'' piece of angle acrossed the top.
My 2004 JD 4110 handles the larger blade quite well. Go for it.

Are you running the engine at the full rated PTO speed?

i like the idea on how you added to your blade, do you have pics if not can you describe how it was rolled to the contour of your blade. you said it's 24'' high i know my jd blade is only 17'' high. i'm wondering how the extra height fits that contour or if there's another break in the roll or if it just extends outwards on the same radius.

I have pictures, but don't know how to send them on the comp.
I cut a piece of cardboard to the contour of the 54''' blade and took it
to the steel supplier and ask him to roll it to that contour. He did really great.
The blade extends above the shorter blade. I put a piece of angle iron
acrossed the top of the 24''blade. Don't think I need it, but it looks
more finished. The steel and rolling was $125.00. That is all I have
in it. Angle iron and wear strip material, I had on hand.
Wish I could be more help. I'm sorry about no pictures on computer.
The effort and expense was well worth it. It works really well.

I CUT MY PLOW DOWN TO 60" TO MATCH THE FACTORY SIZE FROM KUBOTA , BUT CURTIS MAKES A 72'' FOR THE BX24.
A CHEAP WAY TO EXTEND YOUR PLOW IS TO BUY A OLD USED ONE AND CUT WHAT YOU NEED FROM IT.

here's my blow all finished i used 1/4 inch thick plate 24" by 6' wide. tractor handles the snow without a problem

I suspect that the reason deere doesn't make a wider blade is the control problem. the 2210/2305 are fairly light to handle much blade when angling. I started out with a 72" rear blade on my 2210. In deep snow it was useless. the entire tractor would just slide sideways. It worked fine for "bulldozing" huge amounts of snow with the blade straight backing up but hard on the neck, but angling it was a waste of time. I use my front loader mostly now and am considering a wider snow bucket.
