54\" or 60\" Mid Mount Mower?

I'm looking into getting a 22-24 hp Sub CUT with various attachments for doing the landscaping and future maintenance. I have an acre lot, and will be adding more lawn to it, but let's just figure the max size of the total lawn area will be 2/3 acre, and will have trees and shrubs scattered about that I will need to mow around.

I figure a 54" mower will do just fine, but I'm wondering if I should get a 60". Kinda seems like the 60" will be a bit too big for such a small lawn, and may end up making maneuvering around trees and shrubs a bit of a pain.

Will the 54" handle the dips and high spots better than the 60", and therefore scalp less?

Any thoughts other than "get the bigger mower 'cause it'll shave 6 minutes and 37 seconds off my mowing time"? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think either would be fine, the 54 might scalp a bit less than the 60.

The 60 might actually make it easier to mow up against trees, along tight turns, etc because it will stick out a couple inches farther on either side of the tractor so you will have more room between the tires and the object while still mowing up against it with the deck.

If the grass gets real long, the 60 may bog down the engine a bit more often than the 54.

I'd say each has its trade offs, but with a 24hp tractor I would probably opt for the 60 simply because I like having the few extra inches of clearance between my tires and the object I am mowing around because I think it makes it easier to steer around things.

I doubt you'll notice the time savings, but I suspect it would be closer to 4 minutes and 53 seconds quicker on 2/3 of an acre with the 60" deck if most of your cuts are straight lines. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
