Are the Bicycles bikes? No.

Let's not make it too easy though!

Was the dead man a thief?

This is one of those irrelevant ones. The man's occupation doesn't matter. If you reword it, to say:

Did the dead man steal a Bicycle?

Then the answer is No.

I think I've got it now, but I'll keep playing along. Is there a table in the room?

It sounds like most of you have it, but no one has come out and said for sure what actually must have happened. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who's still trying to work out the details. Is anyone still pondering it? If not I'll spell out the whole story.

Solution:

Remember that "Bicycle" is a name brand of playing cards. There are only 52 cards in a deck. The men were playing poker or some other card game. One man had an extra Ace up his sleeve (i.e. he was cheating), and so another man shot him.

OK, you got it! Here's the way I was going to state it (pretty much like you said):

Four men were playing poker, one of the men (the dead one) had an extra ace up his sleeve. One of the other men didn't like to be cheated and took him out. They were playing with bicycle playing cards!
