I'm at the 50 hr mark with my 1540. I know It's due a service, but with the work schedule getting to the shop is proving impossible right now. Any advice on how far I can go before I'm looking at problems? I certainly don't want to harm anything, but neither do I want a $19K tractor sitting in the barn (plenty of weekend work).
Is there something, like engine oil, that is a "must change" that someone with limited mechanical skills (me) can do at home? Will it still take a weekday trip to the dealer for parts?

Thanks for the help,

Gary

i would do the oil and look in the manual most of the 50 hr.service stuff on mine is check and adjust if needed. you will be fine to stretch a little, the oil is easy the filter on the 1547 is a bit of a pain but doable(sp).. jon

Assuming you keep it greased (yes???), I'd just change the engine oil and filter and wait to do the bigger service later

Why not just call your dealer and he can come out and bang the 50 Hour service call out in 90 min or so. That's what I did.....I believe it cost me around $100-110 (parts and all). Yes --- I could have saved some money doing it myself but like you; I am very busy and just didn't have the time. I don't regret it for a second....I went out and helped the guy a little bit and he the guy was a totally great guy --- along with everything on the tractor he even took the covers off my RFM, tightened/adjusted the belts, greased everything, etc ---- WELL worth the money IMHO!!

Back when tractors didn't have fluid brakes or fluid clutches, I didn't worry about the exact hours. Now that these expensive items are in the system, I always change the fluid at or before 50 hours the first time.

hey Jerry,

So does this mean that ALL fluids get changed ( brake, clutch, coolant, oil, etc. ) on the 50 hour service?

Thanks,

Will

This is a bit old now, but I was looking for some specific info and came across this thread. I have a 1533 (very similar) and once you get all the fluids and filters (cost me $150-200) and an appropriate (10+ gallon) receptacle for the old fluids, the actual service doesn't take very long. Even for someone mechanically retarded such as I seem to be... When it's time, just do it! I use FEL and 3 pt. quite a bit, and the hydraulic fluid was quite a bit darker coming out than going in, and there were quite a few metal shavings attached to the magnets inside the hyd. filter.
