4x20 with E pto

I am wondering if the economy PTO option was worth having? As I understand it, when full engine power is not needed for the implement used, it allows you to get full 540 pto speed at a lower engine RPM. I would assume this is a 2 speed gear box set up, is this right? Can an owner of 4x20 tractors set up with this really save that much on fuel?
